Review 4K Movie

There's a good phrase - 'Analyzing the nature of a fairy tale is like dissecting a frog. Some people will have fun, but the frog will die in the end. Luckily, Return of the Swamp Thing isn't going to be analyzed - it's such a light, pointless paraphrase of Beauty and the Beast, based on a comic book from which the first part had the horns and the legs.

Jim Wynorski was called in to direct the film, a rather well-known figure in Thrasher circles. This filmmaker has two talents: He has two talents: he can ruin comic book movies (see also 'Vampirella', or better yet, don't) and he can fill in his initially bad material with a kind of youthful idiocy that makes up for a good portion of its flaws (see 'Death Catcher 2' and 'Killer Robots'). Here, however, his first talent is shown in its entirety, while his second - much more important - is trapped within the framework of the comic book canon, of which there are few, but nevertheless Jim rarely manages to joke and run around with his youthful prowess.

But there are children (2 of them) who can't play, Heather Locklear, who has won a dozen Golden Raspberries (but still got one), and the Swamp Thing himself. Once again he has to deal with the cunning crook Anton Arcane. Who, logically, died in the first part, but here he is not only healthy, but also in human form. And if you suddenly think that everything will be explained to you - then your faith in people and this world is too deep and sincere.

Pros: they made the Swamp Thing a normal costume, there are more explosions, the opening credits show footage from the comic book, another comic book character appeared - actually Abby Arcane (Holland) played by the infamous Locklear. Cons: Everything else. But the main one is the general unnecessaryness of the sequel. Truth be told, I doubted the advisability of the first film either (after all, Swamp Thing is far from the first association when someone says 'DC Comics'), but if that one came out as a very average runaway, it's pretty bad here.

And uninteresting. Like the first part, the events flow smoothly and painfully, seemingly shifting, but not meaning anything. The sexy Sarah Douglas (who plays Ursa in 'Superman') is great, Jourdan is great too, but clearly 'tired of all this crap', the others are either okay (well, except for Durok, who seems to enjoy wearing a bulky suit) or (most often) somewhere in the bottom of the acting pit.

Special effects are unimpressive makeup (there are a couple of mutants besides the Swamp Thing, and no - Arcane won't transform), the good old 'swamp-style' method of dealing with criminals (a punch in the face or throwing them out by their scruff) and some nice but sometimes monstrously inept explosions (though, the final blow-up of the mansion was impressive). There is nothing more special here.

A bad sequel to the average movie, 'Swamp Thing' pleases neither comic book fans nor the average viewer. Everything here is insanely untrue, uninteresting, and simply meaningless. You don't care about the characters, the special effects don't please the eye, and the plot twists and turns are a dime a dozen. At least you don't feel bad after watching it - it's not the kind of film that pisses you off.
