Captain Nolan never considered the irreparable damage he was doing to wildlife. He just did what he did best, which was kill. He went out to sea and killed whales. One day, he pulled a female whale out of the water. She died, and her unborn calf died with her.

The tragedy happened in front of the male whale. Orcas are monogamous by nature, and from that moment the whale began to take revenge on humans. People close to Nolan. With little left of the fishing village, it became clear to both Nolan and the whale that they must face off in a fight that would be the last one for either of them.

Despite the fact that the movie has a significant part of a killer whale, it is not an environmental picture, a gory horror film or a thriller, but a drama.

The drama of a man whose life is burned by tragedy.

At the beginning of the movie we meet Captain Nolan - coldly calculating and even cynical. He believes it is fair to be insensitive to a world he has long since disliked; to a life that allows undeserved suffering. Everything that was sacred to him has perished and will never be reborn, and he himself perished then.

A turning point comes during the hunt. The death of a female whale and her calf reminds Nolan of the death of his own family. Gradually, he begins to see himself as a killer and, perhaps still unconsciously, longs for death himself.

Tragedy leaves a mark on the whale's fin, while Nolan bleeds in his soul. He relives his grief and commits lynching without giving up his fight with the whale. This is his opportunity to look into the eyes of his executioner - life itself.

He gives himself to the judgment of the elements - nature and fate.

This is a very poignant male drama. They both wish they could be in the shoes of their loved ones. But the inexorability of doom, a fatal mistake in an instant devastates the world, turning time into torture.

As best as possible reflects the state of the protagonist the nature of the north - harsh and stingy on feelings, but strong and unyielding.

Nolan becomes his own judge and executioner, he himself is a whale swimming into the ice, never to breathe air again.


Ennio Morricone's music for Death Among the Icebergs is a masterpiece. Filled with perfect beauty and desperate pain. I heard it once when I was six years old and remembered it forever.
