The plot follows the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy, finally starring in a major Hollywood feature film) and his development of the atomic bomb. Beginning with the opening sequence, Nolan lights the fuse for an explosive narrative that unfolds with incredible intensity.

The scientist is torn between the scientific and ethical side of his brainchild. A masterpiece montage helps in showing these metamorphoses. Due to the non-linear structure of the narrative, the tension is sustained throughout the entire 180 minutes of running time, even though the film is based solely on dialog. Ludwig Joransson's bombastic score adds another level of drama, creating an emotional crescendo that explodes with devastating effect.
