Story Movie

The heroes of the movie get to the mythical country of Shangri-La, which is the dream of all fans of esoteric knowledge. In their opinion, the spiritual "center" of mankind is located in the heart of the Himalayas, in an area that is not marked on maps and, in fact, inaccessible, because we are not yet ready to properly use the energy and information concentrated there.

Robert Conway is a British diplomat, an idealistic dreamer on the last plane out of revolutionary China. With him is a motley group of fellow travelers: his younger brother, an oddball paleontologist, a hustler and a prostitute. The pilot changes course and lands the plane in the snows of Tibet. Mysterious monks lead the passengers along secret paths to a warm, fertile valley with magnificent marble statues, gardens and terraces, a kingdom of peace and harmony headed by the Supreme Lama....

Review 4K Movie

That's how you can characterize a person with one concise quote. I don't even have anything to add. And this quote can be attributed to both the director and the main character who voiced it. Frank Capra, as always, is inimitable. The deep philosophical meaning combined with the lightness of the narrative make his movies into something unlike anything else. Something unforgettable.

We have before us a utopia as old as the world. A model for building an ideal society. Or an ideal model of society - it's not important. It's just a play on words. In fact, there is nothing new in this movie, and all these motifs have been used in other works in one way or another. And yet, while watching it, there is no desire to draw any parallels. You just sit and watch what is happening on the screen, trying not to miss a single detail.

This attitude is very much facilitated by the information that comes before the movie. Information about the so to say dramatic fate of this picture, which can be said to have been restored bit by bit, from the archives of the whole world, is unfortunately not fully restored - a small part of the video sequence is still missing. But we must admit that the restorers did a colossal job, and the inserted archive photos fit very harmoniously into the overall picture.

The plot is based on the well-known legend about the mythical country of Shangri-La, where Ronald Colman's hero Robert Conway falls by chance. But is it an accident? And why does he end up there? To build any utopia a very important condition is isolation from the outside world, in this case realized with the help of mountains. But what is remarkable is that isolation is incomplete, and it turns out that our mystical country owes its existence to nothing else but gold. It is thanks to it that so many issues are solved. In general, it is already clear from this that this whole model is worthless. Yes, the local inhabitants do not understand the aliens with their mores, but it is not surprising.

Here it is more important the internal conflict of the group that arrived with Covey, it is the starting point of the whole plot. How will ordinary people behave once they get to the magical land, and will they want to return to the outside world? Or, perhaps, decide to finally break with it? What to choose: almost eternal life or life in the real world? And which of these worlds is real? Or maybe they are both...The director skillfully plays with the viewer, then, convincing him in the truthfulness of everything that is happening, then, giving rise to doubts in our souls.

The movie did not win a single Oscar in any of the main nominations. Not knowing the competition, I'd rather keep silent. But the editing and the artist's work are really worth paying attention to. The episode with the avalanche is something incredible. The picture is still pre-war, then they didn't know about computer effects, but they didn't even guess that such effects would ever appear.

What can I say? It's a timeless classic. And classics don't need recommendations.
