I must confess that I am not a fan of Hitchcock's work, although I must honestly admit that Alfred Hitchcock was a cinematographer with a capital letter, and his contribution to the development of cinema (or rather, the cinematic form) cannot be overestimated. A great innovator and experimenter of cinema, Hitchcock is still an inexhaustible storehouse of quotations and imitations.

'North by Northwest' is certainly one of the maestro's best films. Such an amount of irony, humor and self-parody is not, it seems, no other of his films. And, of course, it was not without the frills of form -- the famous scene of the 'corn truck' hunting a man (with the subsequent crash of the plane into a gasoline truck) is simply the pinnacle of absurdity, which has become a movie classic -- a clear example of the triumph of form over content! Well, who else, tell me, could have thought of such a thing and realized it with such talent and conviction?

The plot of the film is banal and ridiculous, and quite typical of Hitchcock: a man is mistaken for someone he really is, and he is forced to prove that he is not a camel. Plus, practically everyone is not who they seem to be and the whole of America is crawling with spies....

Fifty years after the premiere, the picture is quite interesting and not boring. Some primitiveness of the plot and conventionality of Grant and Sainte's acting are quite compensated by witty dialogues (sometimes, however, not quite appropriate) and good self-irony. The presence of suspense in this movie was not originally intended, and therefore it is not there. But there is a lot of quality humor and drive.

In short: the time spent on watching the movie is not a pity. Very worthy, still fresh, and extremely funny and charming movie.
