Review 4K Movie

I love the way this franchise has run its course. Starting out as a stock family movie in the style of ‘Eeyore Riot’, by the third movie, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ has really transformed into a full-blown blockbuster with battles in space, with planetary scale and.... Yes, with a pretty good drama, albeit one that had been done in a dozen movies before. That's what happens when a video game franchise goes to a real fan in the person of Jeff Fowler, and not another Hollywood slave who has no idea what to do with the source material.

It's obviously not a masterpiece of cinema, not even among the entertainment content, but this movie perfectly fulfills its function of entertainment for the whole family and gives a whole range of emotions while watching it. This is Sonic, not The Last of Us or Alan Wake, which is enough for many people.

But even so, the authors don't keep children for the mentally retarded and dare to show the story of Hedgehog Shadows in all its glory. Honestly, there were fears that the producers would force them to smooth the edges and do without unnecessary dramatization, so as not to traumatize the generation of children, who grew up on Five Nights with Freddy and Poppy Playtime. But to the credit of the authors, Shedou's backstory came out emotional, clinging, even tragic to some extent. You perfectly understand the character's anger at the entire earth and sympathize with him. And it will sound strange, but this is one of those roles of Keanu Reeves, where he ... really hooks you. He not only gave the character a coolness, but also gave the image of an extra depressed, broken soul.

In contrast to Sonic, the character looks perfect in general. Yes, Shedou in the games was originally created as the antipode of the blue speedster, so we all understand perfectly well what lesson both heroes will learn. One of them is essentially a miserable copy of the other who never had a happy life. And the other, looking at his evil version, has to realize what path his life could have taken if not for his family. The plot is standard and easy to read, but it works almost without fail. Because that's the kind of character development we want to see, for it has real chemistry.

Honestly, for me, the relationship between these two characters in both the funny and dramatic moments is the best part of the movie. And so much so that I'm starting to forget about how much dedication the only meat actor who can mimic even animated characters brings to the movie. Jim Carrey played two roles at once this time - Robotnik and his grandfather Gerald. And although the film itself ironizes the fact that the heroes are played by one actor, breaking the fourth wall for the sake of it, I can hardly remember a scene where for me these two were perceived as one character. Despite their similarities and kinship, they feel like different characters with different goals and motivations. While for Eggman, doing mischief is pure pleasure ala Robbie Evil, for his grandfather it's as much of a burden as it is for Shadow. And while Kerry's improvisations are top notch as always and the funny scenes with him are naturally funny, the one moment in the movie where they chat in earnest really got me thinking about more important things.

Loving the development of the other characters as well. You can especially see Knuckles' development after his (sorta)solo show. He's become much more open and is now even willing to sacrifice his warrior vows just to make things better for his new Earth family. Tales becomes more advanced and his skills as a technician, able to hack anything with technology, are shown much better here. Even the human characters, who I found completely dull in the first two movies, this time.... they're okay. There are even some funny jokes involving them, well, and again the script function is decently done. Also Jane from ‘Breaking Bad’ is up pretty good, well, or Jessica Jones, depending on which show you're a fan of.

And the action... honestly, I forgot that in the first part most of the time was spent in the car, because here we have driving battles all over the globe. Toward the end, the writers in general feel like they turned imagination to the max by making Yeji Super Saiyans vs. Space Robots. Yeah, it's silly, but... cool, right? The inner child watched it all with great involvement and at one point even started making 'Pee! Beep! Beep!'. So much of the action is engaging.

Cool characters, their interactions, a mix of driving action and quite serious drama - that's all you need for perfect holiday entertainment. And it looks like this combination is paying off. Critics at Tomatoes gave “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” the highest rating of any full-length video game adaptation in history, and audiences lauded the animated film for its careful treatment of the source material and emotional involvement. And now, as strange as it may sound, the third Sonic can now set an example for everyone on how computer games should be transferred to movies. With respect for both fans and ordinary viewers.

And there is room for development, the scene after the credits promises even more fun in the already announced fourth part, and there is plenty of fanservice. Honestly, I'm in a very optimistic mood about Sonic's future on the big screens, and I sincerely hope that the authors will still be able to surprise us by continuing to give the hero the much needed evolution.
