Story Movie

2050-е. Fleeing from a bloodthirsty creditor who dismembers his debtors, Mickey Barnes and his buddy sign up as colonists on the planet Niflheim. Only the friend becomes a pilot, and Mickey himself is forced to become an expendable employee - to perform deadly tasks, die and come alive again in a freshly printed body, in which his consciousness is loaded. Mickey 17, who has fallen into a cave, is rescued by Niflheim-dwelling creepers, and returning to the base, the guy meets his 18th version.

Review 4K Movie

Mickey-17 was an anticipated enough movie for me to go see it as soon as I heard it was released. And unfortunately, I have to call it a disappointment.

Before that, I've only seen Pong Joon Ho's acclaimed Parasites, which I was very pleased with and even re-watched in 2019, and I expected even more scope from his new picture, because it's his first Hollywood project, and also in an interesting genre with a cool cast. Almost two dozen Robert Pattinson is an intriguing application.

And the movie's plotting, which demonstrates its concept, is really good - it piqued interest and lived up to expectations. However, starting from the second act, the plot tugs, the story becomes rambling, not containing everything that the creators wanted to cram into it, and coupled with a deliberately unpleasant picture, the viewing became frankly heavy.

The film tried to touch upon many deep topics and raise complex issues, such as digital immortality, human cloning, space exploration, colonization of other planets, human relationships, but it managed to show only another criticism of capitalism, presented here too much in the forehead and completely unconcealed. The villain, played by Mark Ruffalo, turned out to be almost a caricature, so he was one-sided and one-syllable. There is an allusion to Trump in him, which could at least give him relevance, but even that is wearing out.

Toward the end, I started to feel like the script was a botched adaptation of some book with a lot of events that barely fit into 2 hours. And after googling it after the screening, I found out that it is - it's really an adaptation of a fantasy novel. And I think, as is often the case with book adaptations, a TV series format would have been a better fit here.

Also I didn't like the dubbing of the film: it has a bad sound mixing, which was confirmed by my friend-sound engineer, who kept me company in the theater, and a terrible voice on the main character - with eternal aspirations, all squeaky and some kind of squeezed. I was also unlucky with the hall itself - the audience was noisy, with children (although the movie is not a children's movie) and showing a clear lack of interest in the movie, which, starting from the middle, I couldn't even blame them completely, because I myself began to count down the time until the end of the session. Of course, the dubbing and the auditorium are not the problems of the movie itself, but it also had a negative impact on the viewing experience.

In the end, I'm ready to give the movie a grade slightly above average purely because of the curious concept and excellent performance of Pattinson - he really tried here. Watch at your own risk.
