Review 4K Movie

'The Golden Child' is undoubtedly a perfect example of a product of the bold 1980s, when cinema was just beginning to establish and reinforce certain stereotypes and genre clichés, while still leaving room for fresh ideas, originality, and experimentation. The latter is perfectly reflected when watching this film by the talented director Michael Ritchie. The name Michael Ritchie may not mean anything to the general audience, but dedicated film buffs know that he is the author of an impressive number of truly worthy and funny comedy films of the 70s, 80s, and even 90s, and his Fletch and Wild Cats are still considered some of the best in their genre.

With a director like that, there's no way this movie could be bad. Especially considering that Eddie Murphy was cast in the lead role long before he lost his former spark and became a hostage to frankly weak films. Once you start watching the movie, it's very pleasant to see that it didn't disappoint. As mentioned above, the entire film by director Michael Ritchie is a full-fledged experiment in genres. That is why the film has enough room for a funny comedy, a dynamic action movie, a gloomy detective story, and even an adventure fantasy. At the same time, the dosage of each genre in this unisex film by director Michael Ritchie is done in such a way that it is very difficult to clearly define the film as belonging to one of the existing genres.

Of course, in places, this kind of genre diversity creates the impression that none of the genres has been fully revealed on screen. Nevertheless, Michael Ritchie's film is a very entertaining, light, charming, and truly interesting film, which is most appealing for its lack of vulgar humor, its sentimentality, kindness, and a certain touch of romance. Even if the latter is presented to the viewer in an overly accelerated and not entirely credible manner. In addition to everything else, the film's visual component is quite pleasing and well done.

The story can certainly be called bold and original. Of course, the main stereotype of American films is also felt here. Once again, the mission to save the whole world falls exclusively on an American, but you simply don't pay attention to such nationalism on the part of the filmmakers. The story develops in the best traditions of fairy tales and, along the way, delights with both the necessary seriousness of the mysticism happening on screen and the humorous interludes skillfully inserted into the picture. Perhaps it does not claim to be great, but it certainly does a decent job of entertaining the viewer. Ultimately, it creates a similar impression to John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China. In a similar way, the film gives the impression of being both a serious genre action movie and a comedy that pokes fun at the genre as a whole.

The main gem of the film is undoubtedly Eddie Murphy, who played his usual role of a witty, talkative, courageous, and at the same time funny hero. Perhaps he does not fully create a convincing image of the savior of humanity, but this emphasizes the irony of the choice that fell on him and perhaps adds even more charm to Murphy's already charismatic image on screen. Charles Dance is damn good in the role of the film's central villain, a role that has always suited him well. J. L. Ritt and James Hong are also good. I would like to give a special mention to Victor Wong, who created a character who may not have had much screen time, but was certainly charismatic. And, of course, Charlotte Lewis, who is a delight to watch with her sweet and attractive appearance.
