The girl Yuraiya was born on a mountainous island in the middle of the ocean. The dense forests here are home to many wild animals, but the most dangerous are considered to be the mysterious creatures known as ochi. Some believe that they are just a fairy tale for children, while others believe that they are hostile creatures. One day, Yuraia finds a lost ochi cub in the forest and decides to return it to its parents. The girl will have to find common ground with this unusual forest dweller and prove to people that it is better to be friends with the ochi than to fear them.

The Legend of Ochi is a visually appealing film. The shots are mesmerizing: mountain landscapes, the play of light and shadow, detailed graphics that create an atmosphere of something grand. It seems like an epic story with deep meaning is about to begin... But no.

The plot seems deliberately made as vague as possible. Who is whose enemy? Are they enemies at all? The answers to these questions have to be gleaned from sparse phrases, fragmentary dialogues, and hints that don't add up to anything. Each new episode adds not clarity, but even more questions, and by the end, you realize that the authors simply had no intention of revealing their plan (if there was one at all).

The characters also seem to be stuck in one state. They do not develop or change, although according to the plot, they seem to have to go through serious transformations. At the beginning, they are sullen, silent men with guns; at the end, they are the same sullen, silent men with guns, only in a different place. There is not a single spark, not a single moment when I felt moved by their fate. The authors of the film did not follow the usual pattern where mythical characters have a history of existence and are endowed with character and destiny. You won't find any of that here.

Dynamics? There's none of that either. There are endless chases through beautiful locations and periodic shootouts. It feels like all the characters are acting without motivation, simply because they need to fill the running time with something.

No, of course, we can speculate about the problems of “fathers and children,” the problem of self-identification, the search for an answer to the question: who am I and what am I living for? But all this is sluggish, somehow incidental. The only conclusion that came to mind at the end of the viewing was that if a person has no meaning in life, they invent one, and often this is not the best solution.

The result: beautiful images did not save the film from melancholy. Instead of emotions, there was only one question: “When will it end?” It's a shame, because the potential was enormous.
