Story Movie

Chet Ripley heads out to the countryside with his wife Connie and their two sons, to a spot where he once vacationed with his father. He wants to be at one with nature, spend some quiet, peaceful time, and bond with his kids... But then his wife’s sister Kate unexpectedly arrives with her rich, smug, and obnoxious husband and their twin daughters—and their peaceful vacation goes right out the window...

Review 4K Movie

John Hughes isn't just a screenwriter—he's a true storyteller! His stories are kind and funny, filled with the unobtrusive moral of comedy, and watching them is a huge pleasure, primarily evoking nostalgic feelings for a time when comedies were truly funny and didn’t rely on an excessive amount of vulgarity, crudeness, and “toilet” humor.

‘The Great Outdoors’ is just such a fairy tale—a small, low-budget but professionally crafted film for the whole family, featuring an excellent cast, directed with a sure hand by a skilled filmmaker based on Hughes’s magnificent screenplay. The plot centers on the clash between two families, diametrically opposed in their views, habits, and lifestyles, who spend their vacation together in the countryside. Along the way, the film raises questions about father-child relationships, touches on environmental issues, and includes a romantic subplot that is barely developed—but its lack of depth doesn’t detract from the overall picture.

I’d also like to mention the scenes featuring various animals, which, in Hughes’s film, talk, fool around, and are full-fledged participants in the overall action—thanks to these scenes, the film is far more charming and funny, as evidenced by the raccoons alone, tearing open trash cans every night!

Ekray and Candy give simply brilliant performances, and the rest of the cast, with a few exceptions, also make a pleasant impression, creating memorable characters. The film is packed with great jokes, and personally, I got a real boost of good cheer from it!
