The 1870s, the Wild West. A train is robbed, and along with the gold, a samurai sword intended as a gift for the president is stolen. The samurai sets out to find the sword alongside one of the robbers, who has his own reasons for seeking revenge. The robber had withheld his share of the loot and nearly killed the samurai himself.

Terence Young’s Red Sun (1971) is a unique blend of samurai cinema and the spaghetti western, bringing together stars from different continents on screen: Charles Bronson, Toshiro Mifune, Alain Delon, and Ursula Andress. After a train robbery, Delon steals a ceremonial sword intended as a gift for the U.S. president and abandons Bronson’s partner to his fate; Mifune’s samurai is then given seven days to return the relic, or else he will face seppuku. The film’s greatest strength lies not so much in its plot as in the charismatic chemistry between Bronson and Mifune: their cultural contrast between the code of bushido and cowboy pragmatism generates both drama and humor. Henri Alekan’s cinematography beautifully captures the vast landscapes of Almería, Spain, and Maurice Jarre’s score sets the tone, though some critics find it overly reminiscent of a TV series. Among the film’s weaknesses are its outdated portrayal of Native Americans and a finale that drags on for about 15 minutes. Nevertheless, the film remains an intriguing genre rarity, an underrated exotic Western that’s worth watching if only for its unique ensemble cast.
