On the eve of the French Revolution, a mysterious masked robber whose trademark is the black tulip strikes fear into the noble scoundrels of a quiet province. The mores of the French aristocracy of the late 18th century, the depravity, cynicism and licentiousness of this 'refined' society are portrayed with extraordinary precision. One of its representatives is Count Guillaume de Saint-Preux, but his behavior can be seen more as a defensive reaction to everything that is going on around him. He realizes that his success in high society can turn into nothing, that the women around him are hypocritical and corrupt, and the men are pompous and stupid. Guillaume himself possesses precisely the qualities that could be acquired by spending years in such an environment and among such people.

In contrast, his brother Julien, a modest and kindly man fighting for the rights of the third estate, is a ray of light. It is amazing how skillfully two such different characters on each other people could play one actor. If anyone is capable of it, it is Alain Delon.

Even in hard times, when around reigns lawlessness and arbitrariness of those in power, when promiscuity and mothballs - a common thing, somewhere near can find a place for sincere and pure feelings. For love, even for two people from different classes of society, for kindred feelings of two brothers.

The movie is both funny and sad. It will cause both a smile and serious feelings.
