Microbiologist Railand Grace wakes up on a spaceship, with no memory of himself or his mission. To be honest, lately I’ve forgotten what good science fiction is like. Most movies in this genre turn out to be pretty run-of-the-mill, making no pretensions to being anything special and pursuing a single goal: to make some money and settle permanently with a rating of 5 or 6 out of 10. But after watching this movie, I felt as if I’d taken a breath of fresh air in the atmosphere of a dusty, exhaust-choked metropolis. I loved literally everything about it: Ryan Gosling’s excellent performance, the unconventional (albeit at times rather slow-paced) plot, and even the film’s unusual runtime of over 150 minutes—I literally didn’t want to leave the theater, which in the last few years has been not just a rarity for me, but perhaps the only exception. And while the film does have a number of somewhat far-fetched moments (like the chase after an alien spaceship and its subsequent successful discovery), they don’t spoil the overall impression—what remains in my memory after watching it are only wonderful feelings of strong friendship, mutual support, and the fact that true values remain constant throughout the entire universe—even if they’re upheld by biologically incompatible beings (perhaps this is yet another reason for all of us—beings who are, in fact, biologically compatible—to reflect on these values).

In short, to sum it up: I watched a solid, well-made sci-fi film that left a great aftertaste. And if Ryan Gosling wins an Oscar for it (though why just him—there’s a beautiful story, great direction, and so much more), I won’t be upset at all. It’s wonderful—there’s nothing more to say!
