The story takes place in Africa. The famous detective Ace Ventura, the world’s only specialist in locating missing pets, is back on the case. This time, Ace must find Shikaku—the sacred animal of the Wachati tribe. Without Shikaku, the wedding between the daughter of the Wachati tribe’s chief and the son of the chief of the warlike Wachutu tribe cannot take place. If Ace fails this mission, a war between the tribes will break out. But Ace Ventura isn’t the type to back down from a challenge. In his search for the sacred Shikaki, he battles alligators, tames elephants, mimics monkeys, swings on vines, walks on hot coals, and—to the horror of a family of American tourists— out of a rhinoceros’s rear end, and turns all of Africa upside down.

The sequel turned out to be even more high-energy, lively, and wild than the previous film—and in some ways even unpredictable, of course, primarily because of the protagonist’s unpredictable antics, which include such gems that you can’t help but be amazed. This leaves viewers wondering: “What, exactly, is going on in Ace Ventura’s head? How does he come up with all this—all these tricks and antics? Is it all due to wild improvisation and astonishing genius? Or is it just his usual lack of manners and boundless self-indulgence?” The answer is obvious: all of the above, both together and separately. It’s Ace Ventura, after all!

It’s worth noting that the comedic (and, in essence, the main) component of this film seems to go beyond the bounds of reality, surprising viewers with utterly surreal scenes that, naturally, come across as extremely concise within the overall chaotic and whimsical narrative, thanks to the unflagging energy of the central character, who is ready to move mountains but still manages to complete his investigative mission.

At times, the film structurally echoes scenes from the first movie, refining them in some ways, but it always strives to surprise with something new, presenting unforgettable episodes such as the birth of a “calf” from a female rhinoceros, a dance with “nature’s bounty” around his neck, a battle with a hardened native, as well as the call of the African wildlife and its onslaught against the true villains during the final showdown.

The sequel has plenty to entertain audiences, dividing them once and for all into two camps—those who prefer the first film and those who are absolutely thrilled by the second. In any case, both films deserve thunderous applause from the devoted fans of the remarkable comedian—Jim Carrey. It is Ace Ventura, it seems, more than any other character played by the talented comedian, who is visually, figuratively, and characteristically identified with Jim Carrey himself, as if they were truly one and the same person in real life. So we can only lament the fact that we have only two films about the adventures of this hilarious detective, although there are rumors that work has begun on the script for a third film. We’ll see!

Thus, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is an excellent continuation of the story about the reckless animal rights activist, offering even more astonishingly crazy cinematic action and delighting the audience with the boundless comedic potential of the unique and one-of-a-kind Jim Carrey.
