Corvette, an unsuccessful fashion designer, teams up with her friends to raid Metro Designers, a high-end clothing store, and then sells the stolen goods for half the price. The girl is fascinated by the creative genius of the brand’s head, Christie Smith, but after meeting her in person, she is terribly disappointed in her, and when she finds out that Christie stole her design, the thefts become a matter of personal revenge and social justice.

One of the thieves dreams of using the proceeds from her thefts to raise the startup capital needed to launch her own clothing line. One day, the thieves encounter another thief who turns out to be an activist from China. From that moment on, events take a completely unexpected and unpredictable turn.

The film’s creator, Boots Riley—who served as producer, director, and screenwriter—decided to make his work resemble the subject of his exploration in form. It’s not uncommon to see completely strange, incomprehensible, and impractical designs at fashion shows. The director decided to make the film just as strange and baffling.

The film “I Love Boosters” is, first and foremost, a comedy of the absurd. The main characters’ appearances, their costumes, the setting, and the events all seem whimsical and eccentric. The humor is based on the provocative setting, the illogicality, and the unrealistic nature of the events. Boots Riley, it seems, wanted to do something completely unusual—to create a sort of cutting-edge cinematic experience. He succeeded, but only partially.

As a comedy of the absurd, the film is, of course, wonderful. The humor is genuinely funny; the strange and illogical action provokes laughter. However, I can’t say that the world has never seen a film like this before. Even while watching it, memories of the film *Everything Everywhere All at Once* naturally came to mind. I think Boots Riley drew his inspiration specifically from that film. If I had to visually describe what “I Love Boosters” looks like, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” would be the perfect example.

The actors’ performances match the film’s overall tone. They’re quite emotional and comical, dressed in strange outfits and sporting unusual hairstyles. For example, when they cast actress Eiza González, who is known for her striking looks, they made her look pale and shaved off her eyebrows, while they dyed Will Poulter’s hair an unnatural color. The music also fits quite naturally into the film’s style, featuring comical, cheerful themes.

The film carries multiple layers of meaning. It is rich with allegories, symbols, and direct commentary that bring social issues to light and condemn the capitalist economic model. First and foremost, the film resonates particularly with U.S. residents. After all, that is where professional shoplifting thrives. These aren’t just random, spontaneous thefts, but entire gangs specializing in this type of crime. So-called “boosters”—professional thieves who form criminal groups—in which some members stage “distractions” in stores to divert the attention of store staff, while others steal merchandise. The stolen goods are subsequently sold for half price or less.

Booth Riley invites us to examine the plight of the African American population in the ghettos, forced to resort to theft, as well as the ruthless greed of large corporations that exploit their workers—including those in China—forcing them to work in hazardous conditions for a pittance. Capitalism is portrayed as a pyramid, with people at the top feasting at a lavish table, while those at the bottom scrape up the crumbs from those tables.

Nevertheless, it seemed to me that the film offers no effective, realistic solutions. “I Love Boosters” resembles a naïve, romantic dream in which people have every opportunity to change the current order through their own efforts and build an ideal world of the future. The film’s message seems utopian, having nothing to do with reality. Consequently, the film’s themes can only tickle the minds of dreamy American left-wing idealists, but cannot contribute to any real change in the situation.

The film “I Love Boosters” is a great absurdist comedy with sharp social and political undertones. The film succeeds brilliantly at its main goal: to make people laugh. The sociopolitical subtext is, for the most part, most understandable and relatable to U.S. residents, but others may also find something to take away from it. However, the film does not offer any real ways to change the political or economic model; it can only fuel romantic, idealistic views.
