Story Movie
Seven years ago, mankind blew up an asteroid flying up to the Earth, but after that it faced the consequences - some terrestrial inhabitants mutated into giant monsters. A year later, the population of the Earth has decreased by 95%. Joel's parents died, and since then he has been living in an underground bunker with the same survivors. He recently caught a radio signal from another colony where his teenage love Aimee lives, and now he decided to get to her. And it will not be easy, because Joel does not have any survival skills, and moreover, he falls into a daze at the sight of monsters.
Review 4K Movie
A tough time for Hollywood has come since the mega sore appeared. To release a film in theaters now is a real disaster for any studio. Which, in general, proves at least this picture. With a budget of 30 million (as I understand it, only the production budget, excluding marketing), fees of 600 thousand, at the time of writing the review, this is a direct failure with a bang (I think many people know that 50% are taken by cinemas). In this regard, and even with a fashionable tendency (about strong independent, etc.) it is no longer necessary to expect any interesting decisions from new films, and this particular story is unlikely to be continued.
Okay, this is a lyrical digression, further on the topic.
The film turned out to be very good in terms of visuals. The picture is pleasing to the eye, despite the relatively low budget (when I saw the trailer for the film, I thought that a new blockbuster was coming out). The monsters are varied, well drawn, the surroundings are atmospheric. Definitely a big plus of the picture.
The plot can also be called positive, although it is simple. Similar stories appear from time to time. It especially reminded me of 'Zombieland' (which I love very much). The protagonist is also not confident in himself, that in the course of the action of the film he grows above himself, goes from point A to point B, in the process knowing himself and making some discoveries in his character. He also talks behind the scenes and this happens in the post apocalypse. Actually, the post-up itself is interesting. Zombies have already hit the holes, nuclear wars too. Mutated insects used to be mainly in category 'b' films, but in a film with a normal budget you can not see this often, it turned out like a breath of fresh air.
It was about the positive. Of course, there are also weaknesses here, and I will write that I did not like it.
In my opinion, the creators of the picture did not succeed in revealing a single character in the film completely, so that they could directly plunge into history and empathize with at least someone. When we reached the end credits, it felt like the film had been heavily cut before it was released. As if some scenes and dialogues were removed. This is very noticeable in the interaction with the characters of Michael Rooker and Ariana Greenblatt, i.e. guys with a sword and girls with a bow. In terms of timing, they just met, after 2 minutes, they already teach him to shoot, after 7-8 minutes the hero has already learned to shoot and learned all the subtleties of survival, and the girl has already become attached to him and is trying to drama. But there were no prerequisites for such actions, a banal grinding in, a full acquaintance with the heroes at all. Just a scene of meeting, the next scene they share their past, the next scene they are friends. The only thing they let us know about them is that the girl's father died, and the uncle's son died. But it was said casually, without much emotion.
Due to this approach, the film looks somewhat chaotic. It can be seen that they wanted to make an adventure comedy in the post-apocalypse. It just didn't work out. The comedy here most often looks inappropriate, as if it was not added immediately, so that the film does not turn out too dark. We could have tried to make a black comedy, but we didn't. And the film cannot be called a disaster because of the given humorous tone at the beginning. In Zombieland, at one time, this worked. There is no. So it turned out, don't get it, trying to look like a comedy, a lot of drama. As a drama - inappropriate humor. As an adventure - more or less can be called, but there was not enough budget for locations and battles with monsters. The appearance of the Captain in the film also somehow looks foreign. The film was about one thing, but the denouement suddenly shows about another, again as if added at the last moment, when they realized that an antagonist was needed. This happens quite often when the script is being edited on the fly. Much still depends on the installation, how the person in charge will cope with the material. Apparently the director had his own vision, and the studio had his own. As a result, not everything turned out to be connected.
Despite the aforementioned disadvantages, the film is interesting to watch, but the masterpiece did not work. It turned out to be a strong 'walker'. I would love to watch the continuation in this universe, alas, it is unlikely that it will appear with such fees.
And of course it is necessary to write about the assessment. I bet 7/10. The film's potential was great, in my opinion it was realized by just 70 percent. It could have made a landmark film.
