The rave reviews from critics took me to the cinema for a new creation by director Sean Levy, who gave us the trilogy Night at the Museum. When I first read the short description of the film, the first thought that entered my head was this: 'Don't expect anything good.' How nice it is sometimes to be wrong with preliminary forecasts.

Plot. The guy (that's the name of the protagonist) is a non-player character (NPC) who lives in an open world video game. 'Free City' is the name of the location-city in which the young man works as a banker. His whole life is a series of actions repeated every day, turning his existence into a routine. One day he meets a mysterious girl and instantly falls in love with her. Will he have enough strength to try to break out of the web of deception?

The storyline reminded me of a mixture of The Truman Show and Ready Player One. It turned out to be a rather successful symbiosis, in which there was a place for satire over modern American society. Between the lines, it literally reads the following: "While you go to work, crimes happen next to you that you don't even pay attention to." The acquisition of self-awareness by a secondary character is generally the main idea of ​​the entire tape. The love line fits well into the main part of the plot and raises questions only at the very end (where its suddenness is overwhelming). Of course, there is a fair amount of fantasy here. There are many examples: artificial intelligence that can recode itself; too smart NPCs with feelings; far-fetched problems of programmers (they cannot just take and write out a ban or remove a character from the game). I loved the Easter eggs, which are references to Star Wars and the Marvel characters. The ending turned out to be somewhat crumpled and ridiculous, but it brings positive emotions to the viewer.

Atmosphere. I would describe the atmosphere as 'relaxed'. All the actions of the characters are somehow too easy. Free roaming, shooting and rioting are reminiscent of the 'GTA' universe. In general, while watching, you can recall many games from a third person. I think that every self-respecting gamer learns something of his own. Almost all of the actors have done their part. Ryan Reynolds (Guy) was good at showing the amorous NPC, Jodie Comer (Millie) charmed with her decisiveness, and Joe Keery (Keyes) played a great computer geek. But Taika Waititi (Antoine) played a silly antagonist, for whom I felt only pity for the whole film, and not the usual anger. Perhaps his character was the worst spelled out.

Special effects. The visuals are a bombshell. Computer graphics are very suitable for a film in which the world itself is built on a video game. Explosions, various icons and inventory look incredibly cool in the context of this universe.

Humor. The comedic component can make the viewer laugh at least several times. I was confused by a couple of silly moments and a disgusting gay joke that Channing Tatum was making fun of. However, in a global sense, this did not spoil the impressions of local humor, so it can be considered high-quality.

Music. The soundtrack pleased me with cheerful and groovy melodies. The composition 'Have a Great Day' is the most memorable one.

Bottom line. At the exit we have a solid comedy action movie that will definitely brighten up your evening. Although he does not differ in originality, he has some kind of fabulous charm of his own.
