There is a house in every town about which horrible things are told. Adults talk about it in whispers, and all the neighborhood kids avoid it. Such gloomy houses reek of dampness and death. And there is hardly a brave man who would even dare to approach the dreadful place in the gloom of the night.

But it so happened that one day an ordinary thirteen-year-old boy entered the spooky dwelling. The nightmare that the hero had to experience is impossible to describe in words.

Eh, I wish my sophisticated cinephile eyes had seen this picture in the nineties. It must have been quite a worthwhile horror film for its time. After watching so many horror movies, it's hard to buy the old tricks, but for all that, the wild screams and howls still took your breath away and made you hold your eyes wide open.

Classy characters. The family of sadistic lunatics is impressive, especially the 'daddy' in black latex. And, of course, the Beetle. All colorful, all perfectly suited to the image.

Not bad for its time! Wes Craven's creations are what modern horror is based on.
