Forty years after his first documentary about the rock band Spinal Tap, director Marty DiBergi has still not achieved fame in Hollywood, so he decides to start working on a new film about the band. He meets Hope, the daughter of the band's former manager, who has inherited the contract with the band, and learns that they are contractually obligated to perform one more concert. Now Spinal Tap must reunite and perform for the first time in 15 years.

Forty years after the release of the legendary pseudo-documentary musical film This Is Spinal Tap in 1984, its creators reunited and released a sequel, This Is Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues, in 2025.

And perhaps this film is one of the most striking examples of the enormous crisis facing cinema when old people don't retire on time and continue to make terrible films, taking advantage of their status and past achievements. As remarkable, full of original humor and energy as the first part was, the second part was just as boring, unfunny, and stale.

If you haven't seen ‘This Is Spinal Tap’, then go ahead and watch it - it focuses on a hilariously funny rock band that tours and constantly argues. This film is rightly considered one of the best mockumentaries.

But the second film... It all starts with the death of the rock band's former manager. His daughter inherits the contract and decides to exercise the remaining right to organize one last concert. The band members have long since moved on to other things and are no longer in contact with each other, but now they reunite and begin preparations for the concert.

Yes, There's Something About Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues has its funny moments. But it's such a lowbrow and blatant joke for its own sake that it's almost embarrassing to watch. It's obvious that the script was minimal and the filmmakers were counting on brilliant improvisation from the 80-year-old actors, which, of course, didn't happen. Influential old filmmakers invited Elton John, Paul McCartney, and several other famous musicians to the shoot, which looks completely ridiculous and meaningless for the plot. So the guys just had fun on set, socialized, had a good time, and packed it all into an hour-and-a-half “sort of a movie.”

If you read the story behind the making of This Is Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues, the feeling of a farce is only confirmed — the creators of the first film were in a long legal battle with the film company that took the copyright revenue from the film. In 2021, they regained the rights to the payments and decided to celebrate this with a new film. Actor Tony Hendra, who played the manager, passed away, so the filmmakers included a storyline about his daughter, who decided to take his place in the manager's chair. Interestingly, the subtext of this plot is as nasty as it gets — Tony Hendra's own daughter accused him of pedophilia...

This Is Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues has a fairly decent rating of 6.7 points. So if you are a big fan of music and the first film, you may well enjoy this sequel. For everyone else, I recommend sticking to the first part.
