Story Movie

On a family trip, a boy named Joshua is pursued by cannibalistic goblins in a town called Nilbog.

Review 4K Movie

The film was directed by Claudio Fragasso, a well-known figure in low-budget cinema, and produced by Joe D'Amato himself — a man who, during his lifetime, could “boast” the title of Italy's most prolific plagiarist in all genres, including even pornography. So why complain about the cheap production or the questionable acting skills of the cast when such a “glorious” famous duo took on the task of making a trash horror film, traditionally hiding behind foreign American pseudonyms, since the film was released directly on videotape with good prospects for distribution as a sequel.

However, despite having the number 2 in its title, the film does not continue the original's storyline at all. There are no trolls here, but instead goblins living in the upside-down town of Nilbog, whose name should be read backwards. A family moves there, unaware that they have fallen into a dangerous trap. Again, looking back at the progenitor, which moves in the direction of children's fantasy, you notice the borrowed basis from a fairy tale, set in an ominous tone, but now the director focuses predominantly on horror, of course using magical motifs in the skeleton of the plot. As a result, the screen offers some rather entertaining ideas that attempt to use original genre elements, portraying goblins as very scary creatures that feed people enchanted food that turns their victims into plants intended to satisfy their own hunger. This leads to frightening scenes of the grim devouring of greenish wretches and a certain amount of “botanical” horror with humanoid bushes.

Visually playing well with the frequent use of a frightening poisonous green color and a set of scary elements, the film still does not avoid an impressive amount of absurdity. This includes the aforementioned acting, which produces almost comical images—the witch comes across as particularly cartoonish; a significant amount of naivety in what is happening; and even a clownish sketch when a boy, wanting to prevent the family's breakfast with enchanted treats, climbs onto a chair and... pees on the dining table! In short, the scares and laughs are evenly spaced throughout the film, although the former significantly predominate, sometimes introducing disharmony into this union.

Overall, the film is unabashedly simple in its script, as well as cheap, since the monsters are made of obvious rubber masks that lack even the slightest mobility or plausibility. And the backbone of the story is quite predictable for horror fans: a family arrives in a secluded little town, which, of course, stereotypically has to be a community of treacherous backwoods dwellers who are aggressive towards newcomers. But knowing the extremely low budget, especially remembering the names of the authors, you catch yourself thinking that it turned out to be quite an interesting, specific trashy horror film based on a fairy tale, even if it is not as magical as the first episode. It depends on what you expect from watching it and from low-budget action cinema in general.
