It all begins on Long Island, where homes are filled with expensive Mediterranean furniture, people wear expensive pinstriped suits, and women spend almost all their time at the hairdresser's. Angela DeMarco, wife of aspiring gangster Frank "The Cucumber" DeMarco, is tired of the criminal mentality of those around her and wants a change of scenery. After Cucumber is caught with his mistress and killed by mafia boss Don Tony "Tiger" Russo, two FBI agents decide that Angela and Tony are having an affair. Angela moves with her son to a small apartment in Manhattan, but the agents continue to follow her, linking her activities to the dirty dealings of the mafia. Of course, at the right moment, passion flares up between Angela and agent Mike Downey.

Angela De Marco is a newly widowed woman whose husband was a member of the mafia, performing various illicit activities, but ultimately paid with his life for becoming involved with his boss's mistress. Deciding to change her life, Angela leaves the suburbs with her son, far away from the mafia families. But even in her new place, she has no peace—on the one hand, she is closely watched by the FBI, and on the other, by mafia boss Tony “Tiger” Russo, who is trying to woo the widow.

Jonathan Demme is now better known for his dramas, which is not surprising, since he directed The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, and his recent works include Rachel Getting Married. Well, I must say that his eccentric comedy about the mafia turned out pretty well too.

First of all, I would like to note the good cast—even Michelle Pfeiffer appears before the audience not as a blonde, but as a brunette. And although the American Film Academy nominated only Dean Stockwell, Mercedes Ruehl was also worthy of a nomination; her character, the boss's jealous wife, is simply beyond praise.

The first half of the film is slow-paced, with events unfolding in a fairly predictable manner, but towards the end, things start to pick up speed, and just before the curtain falls, the viewer is treated to an eccentric comedic denouement. The most important thing is not to take this crime farce seriously; you'll enjoy it more that way.
