Everyone was talking about Bully's new film Das Kanu des Manitu. The big question, of course, was whether it could live up to Der Schuh des Manitu from 2001-and whether that kind of humor still works today or might now feel too extreme. Honestly, I didn't really care about that debate. I was simply hoping the film would bring a bit more substance. Not a dead-serious story, but at least more depth than the first one.

What's immediately noticeable is that almost every single line contains some kind of gag. Even though many of them didn't really hit my sense of humor, after about twenty minutes I still found myself smiling from time to time. Not because the jokes were clever, but because they became so incredibly dumb that the sheer volume of punchlines somehow made it funny again. For the record, I didn't find the first film particularly funny back then either-but at least it felt fresh and new.

Unfortunately, the story is once again pretty weak, and the humor feels very much of its time-almost too safe and tame for my taste. A bit more roughness and courage wouldn't have hurt, especially since this is supposed to be a comedy where you're actually allowed to laugh out loud. To me, the whole thing feels more like a typical 8:15 p.m. TV movie on ProSieben than a film worth seeing in a cinema. That's why I can only give it 5 out of 10.

Ironically, the end credits song is exactly as crude and unapologetic-with jokes about vegans and similar targets-as I would've liked the film itself to be. The song was produced by Stefan Raab, which makes its tone and content pretty unsurprising. Still, it doesn't really fit the movie-just like the movie itself never quite decides what it wants to be.
