Story Movie

1931, England. Small-time con artist Eric Noon has successfully joined the staff of the Davenport family, a wealthy English household, and immediately sets his sights on the family’s daughter, Rose. His carefree life continues until a sudden murder makes him the prime suspect. From now on, to save his own skin, he must not only expose the real culprit but also outwit his rival in the battle for the girl’s hand and heart.

Review 4K Movie

The chosen genre allows viewers to enjoy the mainstay of English high society—national humor. Take the wit out of the film, and it could easily become a mediocre drama with melodramatic plotlines.

The result is a comedy with a derivative and predictable plot, steeped in humor that is 80% crude and 20% subtle and self-deprecating. The screenwriters had a field day poking fun at the everyday life of the aristocracy: at the noisy dinners with conversations accompanied by the clatter of cutlery, at the pastor’s convoluted and, as a result, slightly risqué sermons, and at much more besides.

Not a single main character can be called a bastion of common sense. The clumsy father of the family keeps getting into comical situations. The mother of the family, the countess, is the main toxic and misogynist. The daughters are beautiful airheads you laugh at because they can’t take their eyes off the male servants—after all, it’s only natural for aristocratic ladies to desire not a gentleman, but a gardener, a manure-hauler, a stablehand, or a waiter. No class prejudices here.

The English adore piquant double entendres and won’t miss a chance to show a blurry sausage. Anything goes to create a comic effect; humor isn’t always refined and noble. And the servants? How funny is the housekeeper, who is forced to explain step by step to the servants exactly what they are supposed to do, defining terms like “floor,” “tray,” “table,” and “tableware”—like: “Here’s a chair; you sit on it. There’s a table; you eat from it.” And yet the servants still act stupid.

The film’s plot is simple. The bride’s parents’ marriage plans have been derailed; they had hoped to pass their estate on to a son-in-law. The guests remain at the mansion, staying out of habit to take part in the banquet, go hunting, and gossip to their hearts’ content. Then an unexpected plot twist occurred, and circumstances arose in the lives of the lord and his wife that led to the funeral home being called, and an inspector appeared at the doorstep of their luxurious mansion. Every guest at the canceled wedding had a motive to be a suspect, all in the classic style of Agatha Christie. The story ended with a plot twist you’d expect from an Indian film. The movie is funny, but the humor feels a bit forced. To be honest, I even got a little tired of watching it.
