It turns out that 2,000 years ago, the Magi got it slightly wrong, and due to a minor astronomical error, they ended up presenting their gifts to the wrong newborn. The child’s name was Brian, and he just happened to be born at the same hour and only one house away from You-Know-Who. Because of this incident, everyone later mistook Brian for the Messiah, and he was too lazy to set his fans straight. However, the adoration of the masses has a downside as well as a upside, and so Brian finds himself, to his dismay, in the role of a desperate religious leader of the People’s Front of Judea, fighting for freedom from the Roman yoke—and in the thick of major trouble with the occupying authorities!…

This is actually really funny. And I suppose it might even offend the sensibilities of some believers. Although, to be honest, I don’t really understand why—from the perspective of a rational view of reality—people’s views on non-scientific doctrines are taken so seriously in countries where the church isn’t legally a form of government.

What I’m getting at is that making fun of religion and certain scriptures isn’t the same thing as making fun of real historical events or facts. Oh well.

Basically, the movie isn’t really so much about religion as it is about people’s stupidity. It’s a Monty Python-style crude and trashy take on a biblical story, depicting the rise to fame and crucifixion of a guy named Brian. And despite all the absurd filth and darkness, the movie turned out to be kind and funny. Such is the paradox in Terry Jones’s paradoxical cinema.

The key actors play multiple roles, and Terry Gilliam himself plays one of them.
