Story Movie

Inspector Clouseau’s clumsiness led to his demotion. But the French government forces Dreyfus to reinstate Clouseau so he can help the fictional Middle Eastern nation of Lugash investigate the theft of the “Pink Panther” diamond, which has gone missing again. After investigating the museum and nearly destroying it, Clouseau concludes that Charles Litton, also known as the Phantom, has decided to repeat the most shameful crime of his career…

Review 4K Movie

Lugashi, the fictional Middle Eastern country first introduced in the first *Pink Panther* film (released in 1963), is once again in the spotlight: its mascot, its most prized possession—the “Pink Panther” diamond—has been stolen. The leaders of Lugashi are in despair; Interpol is doing everything in its power to track down the thief, but to no avail. And then the most unexpected decision is made—especially unexpected for Gendarmerie Chief Charles Dreyfus— for Lugashi has requested that Inspector Jacques Clouseau participate in the investigation—or rather, ex-Inspector, since he has been demoted to the rank of patrolman, yet even there he manages to commit his predictably foolish acts and offer the same kind of advice. Dreyfus is horrified; he’s against Clouseau, but Lugasi is a very friendly country to France, and no matter how much Dreyfus might hate Clouseau, the notorious inspector returns to work to recover the “Pink Panther” diamond.

The film *The Return of the Pink Panther* became the third collaboration on the franchise between director Blake Edwards and comedian Peter Sellers. The previous two were released in 1963 and 1964, respectively, though Edwards and Sellers constantly clashed on set, leading them to sever their creative partnership for more than a decade. During that time, an attempt was made to revive the inspector’s adventures—in 1968, the film ‘ Inspector Clouseau' starring Alan Arkin hit theaters, but the premiere was a flop. Although many considered the actor a decent successor to Sellers as Jacques Clouseau, the direction and plot turned out to be quite uninteresting and unfunny. And so, United Artists allocated a budget of $5 million, persuaded Sellers and Edwards to return, and audiences eagerly looked forward to the comeback of their beloved characters.

To further pique the public’s interest, they even brought back a character like Sir Charles Litton, the elusive thief known by the nickname “The Phantom.” He appeared in the franchise’s debut film as well, but back then he was played by David Niven, and this Litton became just as important a character as Jacques Clouseau himself. In *The Return of the Pink Panther*, Niven was replaced by Christopher Plummer, an actor who remains in demand to this day and is a model of professional longevity. With Plummer, Sir Charles took a somewhat backseat role, even though it was to the pursuit of him that Jacques Clouseau devoted all his wonderful energy. Peter Sellers himself made a triumphant return: his Jacques Clouseau’s character was expanded once again, and on top of that, the much-noted, exaggerated French accent was added, which after *The Return...* would become our hero’s trademark. But most importantly, the jokes and comical situations—which mostly stem from Jacques Clouseau’s notorious clumsiness—hadn’t lost their spark, and once again, the audience could easily laugh at the antics unfolding on screen.

It is largely thanks to this that the third installment of the “Edward-Seller” franchise received rave reviews at the time and even three Golden Globe nominations. We must not, under any circumstances, forget the film’s legendary composer, Henry Mancini, whose soundtrack earned a Grammy nomination. All of this combined allowed *The Return of the Pink Panther* to be considered just as high-caliber a film as the very first installment, where we were first introduced to Jacques Clouseau. In theory, a trilogy should have lost its relevance by now and fallen into clichés, but the talent of Blake Edwards himself and screenwriter Frank Waldman (who, by the way, worked on the failed comedy *Inspector Clouseau*), comic actor Peter Sellers, and his fellow actors: Christopher Plummer, Catherine Shell (Sir Charles’s wife), Herbert Lom (Chief Charles Dreyfus, who appeared in the second film of the franchise, ‘A Shot in the Dark’), and Burt Kook (the unforgettable Kato—find out for yourself who this man is), as well as the soundtrack, were enough to remind viewers of ‘The Pink Panther’ at its best.

Today, the appeal of this parody comedy has somewhat faded in the face of 90s comedies, and recent trends; many will even easily overlook this once-very-popular film, but film connoisseurs should familiarize themselves with the talent of Peter Sellers, who created the most vivid portrayal of Inspector Jacques Clouseau, clearly standing head and shoulders above Alan Arkin and Steve Martin; there is truly a great deal of comedy in this actor, especially when he plays the most incompetent security officer of all time.
