Story Movie

Rumors spread throughout France that Chief Inspector Clouseau has died. The whole country mourns, except for Inspector Dreyfus... Finally, he is rid of his hated colleague! However, his joy is short-lived. It turns out that Clouseau's death is just a hoax, devised by Clouseau himself in order to catch a dangerous criminal.

Review 4K Movie

By 1963, director, screenwriter, and producer Blake Edwards already had a pretty solid idea for his new comedy film with crime elements, about the theft of the symbol of the fictional country of Lugash—a diamond known to the world as the Pink Panther. And it just so happened that the inspector who was supposed to lead the investigation was given a role that was significant, but secondary. But all of Blake Edwards' initial plans were disrupted by an invitation to comedian Peter Sellers to play the role of the hapless inspector with conflicting views on logic and intuition.

This appointment radically changed the course of Blake Edwards's planned action, and Jacques Clouseau, who was destined to become a classic figure in the comedy detective genre, came to the fore. Despite the fact that Edwards and Sellers had different views on the film, which led to constant conflicts on the set, their first film was a resounding success, and the theme song by composer Henry Mancini immortalized the comedy, which subsequently spawned several sequels until the death of Peter Sellers, a couple of remakes, and an animated series. After the first Pink Panther, a second one was released, and it seemed that the conflict between the director and the actor had not been resolved, but Edwards had a string of unsuccessful films, which led him to return to the Pink Panther ten years later, and Peter Sellers shone again.

The second phase of the original Pink Panther, starting in 1975, gave viewers a new series almost every year, but this is a case where quantity does not equal quality. The invitation of screenwriter Frank Waldman, who worked on a new version of the adventures of the dim-witted French detective (the film was titled Jacques Clouseau and starred Alan Arkin), which ended in a resounding failure, also did not help: Clouseau's triumphant return, played by Peter Sellers, did not happen. The audience seemed to have missed him, but they were not particularly satisfied with what they saw. Nevertheless, in 1978, Blake Edwards released the fifth installment, which, unfortunately, became Peter Sellers' last work—he died suddenly of a third heart attack at the age of 54, just as work was beginning on the sixth installment, which was to be called The Pink Panther Strikes Again .

Don't think me heartless and cynical, because the following words do not refer to the great comedian of his time, but to the Pink Panther franchise: Revenge... clearly showed that the creators' imagination had practically dried up. You can work on your favorite role as much as you like, but constantly pulling a rabbit out of a hat gets boring.
Peter Sellers tried with all his might not to lose face, and he succeeded — he did a great job of maintaining the quality of his character, giving the audience a chance to smile at the funny and clumsy inspector, but the comedic action scenes that the ' The Pink Panther, were no longer particularly funny, and even without a magnifying glass, it was obvious that they were made up. Herbert Lom (Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus, who hates Clouseau to the point of psychosis) and Burt Kwouk (Kato, Clouseau's sparring partner) also remained true to their characters, but there were no innovations in the plot of Revenge... on their part either. One consolation was the appearance of Robert Loggia, who, as always, managed to embody the image of a criminal kingpin in an impeccable tuxedo and with a large, expensive cigar between his fingers.
