Billy, a young English clerk, is a pathological liar. Or rather, he lives in his own fantasies, in the land of Ambrosia, where he is a king, a general, and a great lover. As a result, nothing but trouble awaits him in the real world. First, his greatest hope—to become a screenwriter—is in jeopardy. Second, he’s entangled in relationships with three women: he’s already engaged to two of them, and he’s in love with the third.

Billy is a young funeral home employee and, at the same time, an incorrigible daydreamer who spends long hours in the imaginary land of Ambrosia, where he is universally loved, elegant, and successful, and where the facts of reality take on a completely different meaning. Billy is also a liar. He clumsily lies left and right, landing himself in all sorts of ridiculous situations from which he can’t extricate himself with dignity, only making his already precarious situation worse.

But the worst thing for Billy is that, above all, he lies to himself. He makes grand plans—to write a novel, move to London, become a screenwriter—and every time, he puts them off until later. But Billy isn’t a romantic, a philosopher, or an outcast—he’s simply a lost little man who amounts to nothing, a tiny part of a gray society, unable to figure out his place in life. He subconsciously fears any decisive action, fears changing anything, and comes up with silly excuses every time. Truly a hero of our time. How many young people waste their time pointlessly and aimlessly, dreaming of being successful and famous, yet making no effort whatsoever to make their dreams come true? Almost every other one.

Toward the end of the film, thanks to a girl named Liz (also a dreamer, but one who doesn’t just let her words go to waste), Billy comes face-to-face with the absurdity and contradictions of his existence—and is faced with a choice: a new life or the old, illusory world and endless self-deception.

The film certainly left an impression and gave me pause—it was eerie to recognize myself in Billy from time to time. I’d recommend this movie to anyone who struggles with procrastination, so they can take a step back and reevaluate their lives. I’d also like to highlight the film’s excellent humor and solid acting performances.
