I woke up from the Disease at the age of forty-five, calm and healthy, and in relatively good health, except for
a weakened liver and the appearance common to all survivors of the Disease.

details of the delirium; I, on the other hand, apparently recorded both the disease and the delirium in
details.

William Burroughs 'Naked Breakfast'

In 1991, Cronenberg took on the film adaptation of the cult novel by one of his most beloved writers, William Burroughs. Cronenberg, by the way, had drawn inspiration from Burroughs' books even before he made 'Naked Lunch', thus filming the psychological thriller 'The Scanners', which was about a bunch of telepaths determined to take over the world. Surely Burroughs had seen some of this strange director's films and so decided to take a direct part in the filming process himself. The candidacy of Peter Weller, who was to embody the autobiographical image of the writer, was approved by him personally, thus discarding any doubts in the viewer familiar with Burroughs' work about the falsity and poor quality of the play.

The disease is an addiction, and I was an addict for fifteen years.

The task of transferring a semi-fictional book, preserving all the atmosphere of madness, was very difficult and no one but Cronenberg would have succeeded so brilliantly. The writer, who uses yellowish powder to poison cockroaches, gradually delves into a world of hallucinations with talking cars and homo bugs. There is no division in the film for easy digestion, it is perceived as a fantastic journey through other people's hallucinations, where hidden dirty desires take shape and content, where there is no entrance and no exit, everything is carefully veiled and hidden from prying eyes.

In schizophrenia, the posterior lobes are alternately stimulated and
inhibited. Catatonia is often followed by a period of agitation and motor
when the lunatic is running around the wards, and everyone's getting a kick out of him.

This bug ordering Lee to kill his wife is the premise of the writer's own real life. The question of 'how things really happened' is open, although it's been hushed up for a long time, but since no one knows the truth, it could be anything. Right up to these bugs that are the fruit of hallucination of the fevered brain mad writer. That's a funny way of putting it.

The composer here, more than ever, is Howard Shore, simply called upon to write music for psychological thrillers. I was particularly captivated by the melody and calmness of the music at the beginning of the film, it seems as if it is a preparation for further immersion in the depths.

I liked the idea with the mutant bugs, their makeup, not disgusting and not scary, leaving only a good impression of what I saw in my mind. True, one scene of a mutant and a human copulating got on my nerves, but it certainly wouldn't have been the same without it. The typewriters, which are a complex organism, are also a little scary. The scene of her disassembly by the main character isn't the most pleasant either, but intriguing in its underlying craziness.

The whole movie as a whole is very even meaningful, considering how it started and how it ended. The whole life goes in a vividly delineated circle, and no matter how hard Lee tried to drown in the world of his hallucinations, he still came to where it all began.
