1943. The German army is retreating with heavy fighting on the Eastern Front. Captain Stransky, transferred from France, arrives to replace the dead battalion commander. This elegant Prussian aristocrat has not yet been in a real battle and dreams at any cost to get the German military order - "Iron Cross".

I don't know. I'm rewatching the movie, and I don't understand who could think of watching such a thing. But my outrage aside, let's get to the point.

First of all, I don't understand how you can watch a movie that doesn't star Tom Hanks or at least Brad Pitt? Why do I need that gray-haired man? Why are he and his platoon so dirty and unshaven? They're not pleasant to look at at all.

Secondly, I don't understand why they're fighting. Normal heroes are supposed to be pacifists, they're supposed to lead each other to peace and harmony. I didn't see a 'pacifist' on any of the soldiers. No, they certainly called for peace, but somehow sluggishly. They were shooting at each other. I don't understand these contradictions.

Thirdly, I never understood why the Germans were not shown normally? They made them somehow human. Is that possible? Where are the normal sadistic Germans who sleep and see how to destroy people and bathe in blood?

Fourth, I was very surprised to learn that Germans were awarded Iron Crosses for bravery? I thought all awards in the Third Reich were given exclusively for killing Jews.

Fifth, it's kind of boring. Not a single interesting character, no Zhid-Bears, no special ways of killing, everyone just shoots from automatic rifles. Minus to the director, he should have diluted it all somehow.

Sixthly, I again give a minus to the director. Somehow he didn't set the mood for humanism. The main character also manages to declare that he will not go in search of the missing soldier. How's that? And rescue operation to organize, helicopters to connect? And if suddenly he has only one mother, and he died? She wouldn't survive that!

And finally, why was there no fiery speech? Because I still don't understand what values the protagonist professes.

So, to summarize, Mr. Pekinpa, it's a little too vivid. That's why it didn't win any awards or get much recognition. You made a lot of mistakes. That's why the movie is safely forgotten.
