In the quiet town of Castle Rock opens an extraordinary store called "Needful Things", where you can buy anything you want for half price. For the other half of the price the owner demands that the buyer arrange some kind of mischief to his neighbor. As a result, the town turns into a hellhole. Murders, fights, explosions, settling scores - the devil himself manipulates local citizens. Not the sheriff, the only man in Castle Rock who wouldn't buy anything from the damn store.

I love the work of this writer, but most people, no matter how much they like the writer, are not able to familiarize themselves with all the works for a number of reasons. So I haven't read the book, and I saw the movie 10 years ago, at the age of 11, having missed Based on a novel by Stephen King. The plot fell into my soul, but neither the name of the movie, nor other information I did not remember, until I searched for it with the help of a special forum. And here I am again in front of the TV screen in a little irritation: on the one hand - 6.5 points on Kinopoisk embarrasses my positive attitude left from childhood, on the other hand - the memory of how much I liked the movie. And what can I tell you? My childhood impressions were confirmed - the movie is great.

My review is written purely from the lopsided perspective of someone who hasn't read the thick volume of the original, who doesn't know all the characters. The atmosphere in the movie is simply magnificent - cold dank autumn, gray clouds, a lonely lighthouse against the background of the sunset sky. Finding oneself on the street, one wants to wrap oneself in a plaid or ride away on a bicycle to warmer climes. But there is also an island of peace and warmth - a local diner, where you will be fed apple pie and tuna sandwich, maybe even, if you are lucky, you will witness a romantic scene of marriage proposal. But there is one more place where a person gets wings that were cut off long ago or are not available now for lack of sufficient funds. The first floor of the store "1000 little things" or Needful things is ready to offer you everything that your heart desires. But how do you buy such things dear to your heart? Simple. To agree to a small prank, to cross the Rubicon, after which your soul is in the long and tenacious claws of a man who has been wandering the earth for a couple thousand years and offers and offers. And people agree and agree. "And everywhere I offered weapons, and everywhere they took them."

The whole essence and philosophy of the movie is revealed in a short dialog between the sheriff (who, by the way, didn't want anything, maybe because everything was?) and the holy father of the local Catholic church, who also managed to get hooked on the hook of "love of things". The shepherd says that a person cannot be forced, there is always a choice. In fact, the stranger who opened the store of marvelous goods did not force the inhabitants of the town to do anything, he offered them, the choice was entirely up to them.

What fascinated me about the movie now and 10 years ago? Its message. There is no need to show long horns, scary masks, hairy tails and clattering hooves, why all this masquerade, when you can be frightened just by the thought that evil sits and sleeps deep in each of us. That if we find a path to it and wake it up, it will wake up and we won't even notice. On the contrary, we will fall asleep and it will rule the ball, and a smiling man will sit by the fireplace and tick off names, crossing them off the list. The very idea that a person can be so easily hooked, like a silly fish in a pond, is horrifying and chilling to the bone. Why scare the viewer with dark basements, incomprehensible sounds, creepy shadows and blood? Why not just look deeper into the soul? And any shadow will seem like child's play in comparison with what homo sapiens is able to do, if you offer him what he is looking for and what he so passionately desires.

I would like to mention the main culprit of all the troubles Castle Rock. Notice how calm this character was throughout the movie. He did not show a single emotion. He did not shout, did not swear, he smiled, suggested, instructed. Yes, the power is in any case on his side, but it once again shows that evil does not necessarily have to be disfigured. The creators of the film managed to embody the image of the lord of the underworld: nothing superfluous - a classic suit, short-cut nails, neat manners, gray wisdom on his head. That's the facade. But if you go up to the second floor or down to the basement, you will not find it all so attractive and alluring. And of course, I can't help but notice this gorgeous Mercedes, so vintage, so black and polished. The perfect car to take a breezy ride to hell.

I give it a solid 8 for keeping me in suspense for about two hours, a true thriller in the best sense of the word. And even though (as I understood from other sources) the movie shows a tenth of the book, but it is shown brilliantly and the idea is conveyed from and through.
