The story of several representatives of bohemia, living next door to each other in one of New York's neighborhoods. The picture describes one year of the difficult life of these people, some of whom are infected with AIDS. Among them is Roger, an aspiring songwriter who is in emotional turmoil after the suicide of his beloved girlfriend. He is still hesitant to have an affair with his neighbor Mimi Marquez, an exotic dance performer struggling with her own problems. In the same apartment with Roger lives filmmaker Mark, who is trying to combine art with commerce. Mark's girlfriend, a circus actress Maureen, who indulges his desires, leaves him for a female lawyer, Joanne. In addition, this close circle of neighbors, friends and acquaintances includes philosophy professor Tom Collins and a street drummer who came to his aid after the robbery. Benny, however, falls out of this circle, having married the landlord's daughter, estranged himself from his friends and failed to keep his promise to provide them with a rent-free space. As a result, he turns from a close friend into a sworn enemy, threatening all the tenants with eviction....

Rent was the first musical I ever saw, and I must say that I will never regret spending 135 minutes of my life watching it. Or 135 “seasons of love” for Chris Columbus's film.

If you have any doubts about whether Rent is worth watching, watch at least the first 2 minutes and 40 seconds—that's how long the first song, “Seasons of Love,” performed by the characters in the film, lasts. After that, you'll want to watch Rent until the very end.

This is a musical about the values that our world is based on: love and friendship. But do you know what touched me the most? The name Mark gave to his film, which he shot about the life he saw around him: “HIV Positive.”

The characters in the film live with this diagnosis, but HOW they live. Most of us don't live THAT brightly. For this idea that life does not end even after such a sentence of fate, I am ready to forgive even the theme of same-sex love, which was not in Giacomo Puccini's original Rent, and which could have been safely omitted in this film.

Although I am a long-time film buff, I cannot remember such a vivid and colorful film, and the soundtrack to Rent can be called “Hymns of Life.”
