Story Movie

Poirot receives a request to investigate the case of a valuable diamond being replaced. He travels to a beautiful island in the middle of the Adriatic Sea, where an exquisite crowd has gathered. The sky is clear, the sea is transparent, and the champagne is ice-cold. But Hercule Poirot is not happy: he sees evil everywhere under the sun. And then—murder. The detective has nine suspects. Each has a motive. And each has an ironclad alibi. Even Poirot is baffled.

Review 4K Movie

I watched an Agatha Christie film starring Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot for the first time. And I liked it. Not as a film adaptation, but as a standalone work.

Of course, this is not how I imagined the little Belgian. I'm sure Lady Agatha saw him differently too. And all the other characters in the film only vaguely resemble their book counterparts. Their main character traits are either simplified or exaggerated.

They went too far with Christine, she is too pitiful and even ridiculous here. Yes, in the book she was supposed to pretend to be unhappy and completely helpless, but here she is obviously overacting.

The decision regarding Arlene was also surprising. We are immediately shown her “in all her glory.” In Agatha Christie's book, we see this character mainly through the eyes of those around her, and those around her see only what is on the surface, which is where the main intrigue lies. Here, everything is so straightforward. I was even curious to see how the creators would get themselves out of the situation they had gotten themselves into with their unambiguity. But they didn't bother and did without any explanations at all.

Agatha Christie is somehow more subtle and mysterious. Her characters have more dignity. In the film, almost no one evokes sympathy.

But as I said, if you take the film simply as a film, and not as an adaptation of one of Agatha Christie's best works, in my opinion, then it's very good. It was filmed on a grand scale: they clearly didn't skimp on the sets, extras, and costumes. It's a very high-quality production. Even though the authors didn't reinterpret anything or bring anything new to the table, the visuals are pleasant and it's an entertaining watch.
