A Beautiful Mind ranks fifth in my list of favorite films. It's a magnificent movie! Among works of art, I value most those that show the progression of a character—how he himself, another character, or circumstances change him. It's mesmerizing. It's especially good when this progression is positive. And in this film, it is just that.
A tale of how humility conquers pride.

In general, humans are extremely slow to change in terms of character, habits, and inclinations, not to mention their personality as a whole. The Holy Scriptures prophesy that “the wolf shall dwell with the lamb.” For certain people, this means that they will radically change their nature toward peacefulness and meekness. But how is this possible in “real life,” so to speak, especially if no one and nothing motivates a person to do so? Russell Crowe's character is a brilliant mathematician, but as a person he is mediocre: unsociable, looking down on others with contempt, vain to the point of paranoia. But life plays such a “dirty trick” on him that it turns out that his genius, in itself, means little. And he cannot fulfill his potential in any way. He faces a fork in the road: either get rid of his voluptuous aplomb and come to terms with himself, or go mad.

In the film's finale, it turns out that what helped the hero (in his own words) to triumph was exclusively the love of his patient, self-sacrificing, and loving wife. Therefore, the film, as it turns out, is not about mathematics, genius, or schizophrenia, but about love. Moreover, in this case, it is about true love, biblical love, agape love, and not eros love, which would most likely have perished in the hell depicted in the film. What is agape love? It is devotion, patience, self-control, understanding, insight, steadfastness in adversity, and self-sacrifice for the sake of a loved one.
Of course, it always starts with erotic love, but that's just “A Beautiful Mind,” as well as hormones, pheromones, cupids, flowers, balconies, colognes, and other such things. Erotic love usually lies about devotion.
It's like when The Beatles shouted “She loves you” and “I want to hold your hand” and girls all over the world went crazy and started climbing over barbed wire to get to Lennon and McCartney on stage, screaming desperately to see who would get to them first.
Erotic love has a very poor grasp of self-control, otherwise the question of sex before marriage would always be dull, not acute. The same goes for patience — where would it come from when such a giant, shining pheromone magnet is placed nearby? And to make this magnet shine even brighter, the girl will show the guy how smart, beautiful, and rare she is, and the guy will do the same. Then, of course, there's the wedding, whether with sex before or after. And everything would be fine, but then suddenly — bang! — it turns out we have a Russian spy sitting in our closet. And, worst of all, he'll probably never leave. So where's your erotic love? Share it with the “Russian spy”?! It seems so... And then there's a knock at the door. You open it, and there she is. Agape love. Wet and unattractive, she is holding her daughter, humility, by the hand. Let me in, she says, to warm myself. If you send her away, it will be the end of your love. If you let her in, you will save your marriage, and perhaps only then, years later, your handsome Russell, gray-haired, with an uncertain, Parkinson's-like gait, will confess his love to you for the whole world to hear from the high stage.

That's what this film is about.

Let's let agape love into our homes, citizens! Because only in it is there happiness. And victory over pride, vanity, stupidity, short-sightedness, and even madness. And this is not pathos. This is life.

The film is beautiful not only in its idea. The staging, the actors, and the entire setting are magnificent. I saw a clip of deleted scenes. Even they are good. The director cried about not being able to include them due to the required running time. I would have included them.
