'Cutter's Path' is a prime example of neo-noir. Paranoia, a sense of doom, pessimism, confusion, and the search for one's true self—the film contains the full range of elements characteristic of this genre.

The main characters—a gigolo played by Jeff Bridges, war veteran John Heard, and his wife Lisa Aikhorn—all feel lost in a society where injustice reigns supreme, those in power rub their hands together greedily, and hedonism smirks arrogantly. Depression has paralyzed these people; a sense of doom keeps them from sleeping peacefully, and paranoia makes them see an enemy in everyone. And to escape and try to find at least something beautiful in this world, they seek refuge in whatever way they can—some drink themselves into a bestial stupor, while others indulge in debauchery. And this oppressive routine seems set to last forever...

And then comes the catalyst: the murder of a young woman. Suspicion falls on a certain J. J. Corda, a wealthy and highly influential man. And here the characters’ feelings and thoughts diverge: some want to expose Corda, while others see it as pointless—after all, power is power, and victory will ultimately be his anyway.

This film is less of a detective story or thriller, but more of a drama, more of an attempt to delve into the souls and emotions of ordinary people, tired of everything in the world—and, perhaps, of each other...

The acting is worth noting: Jeff Bridges delivered a solid performance, Lisa Eikhorn was quite talented, and I consider John Heard’s role to be the best in his filmography. I’m not exaggerating, believe me...
