Story Movie

After his girlfriend disappears, artist James Sunderland sinks into depression and drowns his sorrows in alcohol. When he suddenly receives a letter from her, he sets off for the place where they were once happy—the resort town of Silent Hill in Maine. But Silent Hill is no longer the same.

Review 4K Movie

This town is not at all what it seems. If you are in love and happy, Silent Hill is a charming, lush resort town. But if darkness dwells in your soul, it’s a deadly place where fire, flood, and an unknown epidemic rage simultaneously, and monsters roam the labyrinthine streets in the fog. But the movie *Return to Silent Hill* isn’t what it seems either. You go to the movies expecting a video game adaptation, a horror film, likely anticipating nerve-wracking scenes and shootouts with monsters, but you end up in… a psychological drama. I think this is the reason behind many viewers’ disappointment and the low ratings. People expected a story, but they were shown a soul turned inside out.

Events unfold chaotically, much like the drunken haze of the main character, James Sunderland. At the beginning of the film, the once-successful artist is practically at rock bottom, seemingly because of failed romantic relationships. He receives a strange letter from a girl named Mary with a passionate plea to return to the place where they were once happy, which, without a second thought, he does. Only this place is Silent Hill, which reopens emotional wounds and turns nightmares into reality…

In general, the film contains many references to the game Silent Hill 2, not only to the 2024 remake but also to the 2001 original. Evoking nostalgia, some scenes directly replicate gameplay moments, right down to the camera angles. Jeremy Irwin, who plays the protagonist, sometimes comes across as a bit unnatural, with skin that’s too shiny, like a 3D character in a cutscene. And those he encounters in the town also look strange and resemble NPCs, whether it’s a homeless man, a disheveled girl with a doll, or a woman in revealing attire. But it seems that the film reflects the director’s take on the games. In the games, there were only vague hints as to who was hiding behind the heavy iron mask of the terrifying Pyramidhead monster, but in the film, one scene clearly shows us who it is. They even introduced the mythological Arachne as his adversary, as if she had stepped right out of Paul-Gustave Doré’s 1861 engraving.

That said, the film isn’t very scary. And there’s very little action. Because its essence, as I understand it, is an exploration of the hero’s emotional wounds and struggles within the unhealthy, failed relationship between James and Mary. It’s a film about how the characters both loved each other and, at the same time, managed to poison each other’s lives. It’s about how James would sometimes try to save Mary in various ways, and other times destroy her. And Mary would sometimes try to make him happy, and other times do the opposite, so to speak. But all of this is shown not directly, but through wandering through labyrinths, ashen landscapes, and encounters with monsters. Viewers who appreciate complex metaphors, look for symbolism in everything, and enjoy intricate plot twists will surely be delighted. But if you’re expecting a plot as straightforward as a board with nails, simple explanations of mysteries, and fights, this film doesn’t have much of that. And, perhaps, this can fairly be considered a flaw.

On the other hand, *Return to Silent Hill* prompted me to reread Leo Tolstoy’s *The Kreutzer Sonata* (1890), with which, it seems to me, the film has quite a lot in common. In the novella, the story is also reconstructed in fragments, and the unfortunate Vasily Pozdnyshev meets a girl with curls who radically changes his life. In this novella, something also went wrong in the characters’ relationship, and Vasily seems to have plunged into his own inner Silent Hill.

It seems to me that *Return to Silent Hill* is only formally a horror film. It’s a rather twisted drama that visualizes mental anguish and all manner of emotional turmoil in an endless vicious cycle into which the protagonist has driven himself. In reality, this isn’t a light, entertaining movie to watch with popcorn. But it’s gripping and interesting in its own way. After all, perhaps the scariest nightmare isn’t a monstrous, inhuman creature that leaps out howling in rags, but rather when people stop loving one another?
