Story Movie

Luxurious mansions, private jets, and even their own islands—the Redfellow clan’s fortune is worth billions. Beckett dreams of inheriting it all, even though the head of the family disowned him before he was even born. However, seven spoiled rich people stand in the way of his dream life. To speed up his turn in the line of succession, Beckett will have to “cut down” several branches of the family tree. And he must do so with such audacity and ingenuity that he avoids punishment for the murders.

Review 4K Movie

Life’s twists and turns often take us by surprise. But when, after his brilliant performance in "I’m Not a Killer", Glen Powell dons a mask once again, it’s no longer just a surprise—it’s a creative statement. In "How to Make a Killing", the actor radically switches sides—transforming from a charming fake hitman into a cold-blooded hunter of billions—but the concept of transformation remains the same. He once again plays with identity, changes faces, and glides between characters. And this genre echo makes watching the film a double pleasure: it’s as if you’re watching an alternative sequel to the same game, only the stakes have risen to the point of actual death.

But let’s get to the heart of the matter. John Patton Ford’s film is not just a black comedy about a battle for an inheritance. Behind the flashy facade of murders and masks lies a surprisingly vivid, almost tangible passion, of which the main character—locked behind the sturdy gates of the family estate—was completely deprived. And here a reasonable question arises, running as a leitmotif throughout the entire film: who is actually the main character here?

It seems to me that the answer is hidden in the shadows. It is the head of the family, played by the magnificent Ed Harris. It is he who, observing what is happening, much like Scrooge from the Christmas tale, gets a chance to meet the spirits. Only here, the spirits are the storylines of his potential lives. Every memory, every turn that could have happened, is almost instantly sent to the graveyard of memory—too painful, too late. We see how the entire narrative gravitates toward the bars of a prison cell, but this is not an attempt to beg for forgiveness. It is an attempt to express to the Father (through the figure of the priest) the one thing he managed to inherit—a worldview. Or, more precisely, Capital. Margaret Qualley embodies here not just a woman, but Capital itself, its essence: “I will always protect you from any emotional pain.” And it is precisely this poison that the old patriarch’s heart has absorbed: the main secret of salvation is not to be alive. Otherwise—a heart attack!

The director generously scatters visual metaphors of this emotional amputation throughout the film. Important decisions—those very flashes of consciousness—are made in empty, sterile offices where not a single sincere word has ever been spoken. And true desires can only be entrusted to a telephone receiver, which provides broken feedback: words vanish into thin air, meeting no response. Thus, all the branches of the tree of life inevitably lead back behind bars, because the fear of feeling proved stronger than the passion for money.

And just like the MAIN character, let’s not be verbose in this description; I’m sure you’ll notice the rest for yourselves.

“How to Make a Killing” is a smart, multi-layered film masquerading as a light comedy-thriller. Glen Powell once again proves that his niche is that of a charismatic chameleon. But the true heart of the film lies in the quiet, almost silent performance of Ed Harris, whose character realizes by the end: the true legacy we leave behind is not money, but the ability—or inability—to be alive. And it is this bitter wisdom that the viewer takes away with them.
