When 13-year-old Alpha returns from a party with a new tattoo, her mother—a doctor—is horrified. She fears her daughter might have contracted an incurable disease that slowly turns people into something resembling marble statues. It takes two weeks to get the test results, but rumors are already spreading at school, and things aren’t exactly calm at home either—Alfa’s wayward uncle, whom she last saw eight years ago, is now moving into her room.

An atmospheric art-house film, reminiscent of an unsettling dance of despair, anguish, and deep sorrow. The direct analogy that comes to mind as the story unfolds isn’t actually all that obvious—it was most likely introduced deliberately to evoke precisely this comparison, only to then temper it with nuances and reinterpret it. There’s probably an element of exploitation here, but it may well be justified.

It struck me that the film is largely about how, as people grow up, they lose their sense of self—especially when they succumb to their passions and endless self-reflection. Another important point is that past mistakes can greatly affect not only your future but also everyone connected to you. And, of course, on the surface lies the theme of collective fear and rejection of everything that seems dangerous and incomprehensible. The authors themselves say that the main idea is drawn from their personal experiences related to the HIV epidemic.

Plot.

A terrifying epidemic is raging across the world, turning people into marble statues. The process occurs gradually; its outward symptoms are immediately noticeable, and the patients suffer greatly before eventually dying. Where the disease comes from and how it spreads is not entirely clear. It appears to affect only adults.

The main character is a schoolgirl who gets a tattoo at a house party, possibly with a dirty needle. She begins to show suspicious symptoms, and now many people are afraid to interact with her. Her mother works as a nurse at a hospital where there are many such dying patients, and she is deeply worried about her daughter. To make matters worse, her mother’s brother—a broken, down-and-out man—moves in with them. He is a drug addict and, it seems, is also infected with this disease.

A strange, unique film that leaves you feeling sad, yet at the same time offers a fleeting sense of understanding and acceptance. A sad fairy tale for adults. It’s unlikely to appeal to everyone. I actually quite liked it—thanks to the atmosphere and the strong acting.
