Review 4K Movie

It’s rare for a sequel to evoke more positive emotions than the original, but *28 Years Later: The Bone Temple* managed to pull it off. And this is despite the fact that I’m usually wary of sequels where the director has changed. But Nia DaCosta didn’t just copy Boyle’s style; she brought something of her own to the franchise.

For those who aren’t in the know: the action takes place immediately after the events of “28 Weeks Later.” Spike, the boy from the first film, falls into the clutches of a cult led by Sir Jimmy Crystal. Jack O’Connell is brilliant as the madman. He continues to solidify his reputation as an unscrupulous scoundrel, and it suits him incredibly well. His Jimmy is a cross between a televangelist, a cult leader, and a psychopath who sincerely believes he is carrying out Satan’s will. The scenes with him are overflowing with twisted absurdity and cruelty.

At the same time, we’re shown Dr. Kelson. Ralph Fiennes is living proof of talent and greatness. Yes, in appearance and mannerisms, he vaguely resembles Voldemort, who set up a lair with Horcruxes, but, in essence, the character is entirely different. Kelson is the last humanist in hell. He doesn’t just study the infected; he tries to see the human in them. This is especially evident in the scenes with Samson—the massive alpha who returns from the first film. Their relationship develops in an unexpectedly touching way, raising the question: is some kind of connection still possible in this world between people and those they have become?

When the storylines of the unhinged O’Connell and Fiennes finally intersect, we witness a whirlwind of madness, spiced with philosophical debates about faith, science, and the meaning of existence. And despite their differing views, it’s a clash of two philosophies of survival. And the most surreal performance of all is Fiennes’ cover of Iron Maiden’s “The Number of the Beast.” A scene that blows your mind in the best possible way. Music reigns supreme here. Duran Duran, Radiohead—it all fits the theme.

Visually, the film is different. DaCosta doesn’t try to copy Boyle’s shaky camera or iPhone experiments; she shoots in a more classical style, but it’s no less intense for that. She manages to convey the vastness of the wasteland, the claustrophobia of the temple, and the repulsive immediacy of violence. She complements and expands the boundaries of the created world.

“28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” continues the trend toward intelligent horror. It’s a film that explores how people lose their humanity long before the “infection.” About faith that saves or kills. About whether madness can be healed or if it’s easier to worship it.
If plans for the trilogy fall through, it will be a great shame to lose one of the best trilogies in the genre.

And as for Fiennes, I will never tire of lamenting that he deserves an Oscar more than anyone else and is, in fact, one of the most overlooked actors of our time.
