Story Movie

Sally Farnam and her husband move into a Victorian estate that has been uninhabited for several years. In the basement, the girl discovers a beautiful fireplace bricked up with brickwork, and the door for cleaning the ashes is securely sealed. The carpenter says he did this at the request of the previous owner of the house, Sally's grandmother, and assures the new owners that they should leave everything as it is. But the girl's curiosity gets the better of her, and she unscrews the door, thereby releasing terrifying demonic creatures.

Review 4K Movie

Fear of the dark is probably the oldest and most common phobia, especially in childhood. “I believe what I see with my own eyes” — in the case of darkness, this statement loses all meaning. Yes, we see darkness, but we cannot see what is inside it. And so our minds conjure up the most terrifying monsters, ready to burst out at any moment. Over the years, this fear passes, but not for everyone. So, “Don't be afraid of the dark,” 1973.
Many of us loved to get together with friends as children and tell scary stories. They were simple, uncomplicated, sometimes short, and revolved around a small but complete episode. It was especially scary when the end of the story was interrupted by some frightening episode. The rest was spun by our excited and frightened minds. And “Don't Be Afraid of the Dark” can be classified as such a scary story. It's not even really a horror movie, but rather a story that can be used to scare small children.
Sally and her husband move into a large old house that she inherited from her grandmother, who has already gone to heaven. The interior is filled with the spirit of antiquity and antique items. And there is a small door that is always locked. Naturally, curiosity always prevails in such stories, and Sally eventually looks inside. There she finds a dusty room that served as the study of her grandfather, who died under strange circumstances. And in the corner of the room is a fireplace, built of stone and with a tightly screwed-down hatch for removing ashes. An old carpenter who worked for the previous owners of the house tries in every way to dissuade Sally from her rash action. For some things are better left as they are. And once again, curiosity gets the better of her...

The necessary atmosphere of fear and uncertainty is created here through the use of two factors, or phobias, that everyone has experienced in one way or another. The first is the creation of a collective image of some old and mysterious place that has been frightening people since childhood. Some people have had goosebumps since childhood just from looking at the basement door, while others feel uneasy when passing by a house that has been abandoned for many years. For screenwriter Nigel McKind, that place was an old stove with a huge ash pit. And it was this very place that served as a home for certain creatures that began to haunt Sully. The second phobia is the fear of the dark. As children, we were probably all afraid of it. But each of us in a different way. For some, it was a substance capable of absorbing everything around it, while others thought that monsters lived there. After watching Dracula in 1992, I thought that the spirit of the most famous and terrifying monster of all time lived there.
For Sully, the creatures of darkness were small beings with scary faces and hairy bodies (at one point they reminded me of mini gorillas) who, for some unknown reason, tried to drag her to the bottom of the ash pit. But this is a scary fairy tale, which means that reasons don't really matter here.

It is precisely because of these two factors, which weigh on the viewer's subconscious, that this story was created, and this is its main charm. Because the narrative is not particularly vivid or dynamic. The plot develops in a straightforward manner from the first to the last frames. Arrival at the house, discovery of an old fireplace, opening of the fireplace, first visions, distrust from those around, and the final night of “fear.” Even the ending does not claim to be phenomenal, shocking, or simply unusual. It is both expected and unexpected at the same time. You could say that what we have here is a perfect scary fairy tale, slightly stretched out to a feature-length film. Many questions arise, but the creators never give us the answers. However, the impressions from watching it remain very real and vivid. The film may not scare you, but at least it will allow you to dive into your childhood for a moment, when such a story could cause many sleepless nights or at least be a source of unforgettable emotions and impressions.
