Story Movie

No one knows where Harry Maddox came from or what he did before he ended up in this backwater Texas town. But it’s quite clear that he’s just passing through and won’t be staying here long. His only problem is how to kill time. He could go to the local bar, known as “Hot Spot,” and drink himself into a stupor. Or to respond to a woman’s inviting glance, forgetting that she’s your boss’s wife. Then again, there’s one more option: rob the local bank.

Review 4K Movie

Denis Hopper is known to movie fans around the world for two reasons. The first, and more common, is the vast number of villainous roles he played, which led people to refer to him as Hollywood’s leading villain in the late ’90s and early 2000s. The second is his directorial debut, "The Carefree Rider", about which much could be said, but today, the reason for remembering Hopper is entirely different.

Harry Maddox arrives in a run-down little town, somewhere in a hot, southern state. He’s on the run from someone or something, and this is just a stopover for him—a breather along the way. His goal is to have some fun and make a quick buck. But in any American town, there are characters ready to rival even top-tier traveling performers in their resourcefulness, shrewdness, and greed.

Right from the start, Oliver Stone’s “U-Turn” comes to mind—though, of course, that film came later. The comparison clearly does not favor “Hot Spot.” Even for 1990, the film feels dated. The narrative—simple and unadorned—follows a man entangled in a web of vices, including his own.
And a two-hour runtime for a crime-drama is an unforgivable luxury and a waste of the audience’s time.

These are the main drawbacks, along with the film’s lackluster pacing. But enough about what’s missing—let’s talk about what the film does have. Even if we’re talking about a level of candor that’s rare these days. Jennifer Connelly, Virginia Madsen, and a whole cast of nameless strippers will show viewers what they’ve been hoping in vain to see in today’s films, which merely dare to hint at the existence of bedroom scenes.

The plot—even though its twists won’t surprise a seasoned viewer—could have maintained tension throughout the film with the right approach to editing. It seems that Hopper took pity on his colleagues and didn’t cut up the footage that had already been shot, leaving in all the successful takes, even if the scenes weighed down the film’s cohesion like dead weight. Even so, the atmosphere of the stifling small town is well recreated. It’s possible to feel the scorching sun, the heat of the fire, or the coolness of the lake at night on your own skin, even with just a little effort of the imagination.

The actors are natural in their roles and don’t seem to be trying too hard; viewers already know what to expect from them, so there’s no need to prove the obvious all over again. It was especially nice to see familiar faces from the cult TV series “The X-Files” and “Twin Peaks.” It’s a shame that Dennis himself didn’t find a small role for himself—even just a cameo.

“Hot Spot” will be quickly forgotten, but today it’s valuable simply as an excuse to remember an excellent character actor—a director who gave world cinema a breath of fresh air: Dennis Hopper.
