Phoenix was born into a circus family. His father Orgo was a knife thrower, and his mother Koncha was an acrobat. One day, a woman saw Orgo meeting a young tattooed woman. In a fit of jealousy, Koncha threw acid in her husband's face. In revenge, he cut off both of his wife's hands, and then cut his throat. All would be fine, but it happened in front of the little Phoenix. Naturally, the boy ended up in a psychiatric hospital.

Many years later, he was released and settled with his armless mother. Phoenix sits at home all day, helping his mother prepare food and trying to invent a formula for invisibility. As the memories of his childhood begin to visit Phoenix, a series of brutal murders begins in the city.

Our world ends where the circus begins. Where tricks, illusions and transformations come to the place of the present, where it is easy to be deceived and not difficult to be deceived. Here the mind believes in the eyes, and the eyes see what the mind believes in.

Jodorovsky makes the circus the scene of his film, he takes the circus out into the street, he mixes the circus with life, and life interferes with circus performances. He blurs the lines between the arena and the street, portraying a short freak in a circus arena and a hypertrophied giant on a city street, he throws a funny elephant funeral with a clown funeral procession and a raging raid of a hungry crowd with whitewashed faces.

The director fools our heads, forcing us to look through the eyes of the protagonist and see the world through the prism of his painful consciousness, he imperceptibly, without any special effects, but only due to a skillfully built visual series, replaces the viewer's consciousness with the consciousness of a serial killer. Gradually, frame by frame, the line between illusion and reality is erased, turning into a single stream of consciousness, following the foggy gaze of the protagonist, following his memory, following the traces of his bloody representations.

The picture is filled with symbols and allusions referring to biblical texts, legends, myths and fairy tales, which are far from immediately clear, but give great food for thought and interpretation of the transformations seen. The actors, as if on purpose, play in an underlined-picturesque manner, characteristic more of circus performers than of dramatic actors, this is greatly facilitated by the presence of a dumb girl-tightrope walker among the characters, whose connection with the main character is looped in the plot of this picture from the first meeting at the beginning to last date at the end.

Much of what he saw makes Alejandro Khodorovsky associate with the image of Orgo, the father of the boy Phoenix, who tattooed his son's chest with a knife, thus making him into the male estate, while in this picture the director mercilessly put his two sons to play the main role, risking that a cruel performance could turn out to be dangerous to normal consciousness.

Looking at the younger one, one wonders: did the folder not apply physical measures to him (he looked very expressive in scenes of violence), how hard it was for the elder? But they did it. Bad thoughts - there, undoubtedly, their abilities are innate, like the talent of Khodorovsky himself - the elder, who designed and presented a real miracle of art, breaking his head in two, forcing him to think, think, think and reflect.
