Shy and melancholic Joel lives an unremarkable gray and dull life. But one day, instead of his usual work route, the young man suddenly takes a train in a different direction and rushes to the sea. On the sandy shore, Joel spots a girl with bright blue hair. On the way back, they meet in the train car and the guy realizes that he and Clementine have a lot in common, as if he already knows this girl. Pretty soon Joel realizes that he really did know her, moreover, they were a couple.

Life is a never-ending series of trials and errors, a long road on which we meet different people. Sometimes it's moving forward, and sometimes it's going in circles. Sometimes it amazes us with its simplicity, predictability of what happens, and at other times - everything is so confused, the cycle of life closes and it seems that "there is no way out". The feeling of deja vu, the feeling that you have already met a certain person, you have experienced this or that event more than once, that it all was, it all was... And you felt as bad as now, and you also wanted to delete it all from your memory, to make it easier. And now it's happening all over again. You haven't broken out of the circle. Or maybe you don't have to. Maybe it's not what you really want at all...

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" for me personally is an example of "clever melodrama". You may agree with the film's creators that there are elements of mysticism, fantasy, light humor and even a thriller, but they are only elements. "VCHR" - is first and foremost a love story, but it is not filmed in the same way as the many clichéd lav story films. It's another story, it's another movie.

Eternal...

The theme of love is eternal. What else is there to make movies about? Love or war. I think it's better about love. However, so much has already been said about it that it's difficult to come up with something new, to create your own vision, your own story. That is why the creators have to work not so much with the content as with the form. And so, this very form, or wrap, of the film came out as best as possible. Exactly due to its form one may re-watch the film several times even not being a fan of melodrama genre, each time finding something new, wondering how it is that one or another detail could not be seen at once.

Enjoying the form, you should not miss the content, fortunately there is enough of it here too. There are feelings, emotions, many problems, and memories in the film. The film is not empty. That does not mean that it is a philosophical treatise on the eternal problems of being, at all, the picture is devoid of tedium and moralizing. It is filled with action, both external and internal, happening in the characters' souls, it is full of dialogues, some funny moments, sad, slightly fantastic. The frame is full of details, the picture is bright and juicy, the music perfectly fits the general atmosphere.

...Sunshine ...

The film was a rediscovery of Kate Winslant and Jim Carrey in the lead roles. As they admitted in interviews, their goal was for Jim to play the typical Kate - the intense angst, despair and other charms, and for Kate to play the typical Jim - a certain eccentricity, strangeness. The way I see it, they succeeded. This is the first time I've seen Jim Carrey play. In comedies he created his own unique image, thanks to the incomparable facial expressions, but he always has to play the same role. I think he himself is tired of it (released not so long ago the picture "Number 23" to prove it). He could finally change his position... The role of Kate is vivid, memorable - her colorful hair, her mood swings, her Clementine, her "mandarin duck" stuck in my heart forever. They both BLUE in this movie, as stars are supposed to.

...of the Spotless...

To start with a clean slate, to cross out the past. You don't have to forget a person along with the past to do that... To let go of all the heaviness, to turn the page. The heroes of the film have brought this metaphor to life: they have tried to tear unwanted pages out of the memory diary and start all over again. But now and then indistinct traces appeared on the seemingly untouched sheet - a hand with great pressure wrote on the last page, pressing names, titles, so that it is impossible to get rid of these memories, unless one throws away the notebook itself ...

...Mind.

The mind and the senses are in perpetual opposition. Feelings are chaotic, spontaneous, deep and superficial at the same time. The mind is rational, lucid, rigid, stingy, too dry. On the one hand, it is because of the storm of feelings and overwhelming negative emotions that the characters make their mistakes. On the other, it is because of their cold rationality that they cannot afford to be around each other, knowing ahead of time that someone will start to get bored, and someone will be dissatisfied with something. What's left?

A clear mind. Free ourselves from prejudice, look at the world in a new way, and give it another chance...Against all odds, against all odds, against all odds...Let the pure, untainted mind shine again, and who knows, maybe its shine will really be eternal?
