After her husband's death, Harper travels from London to the countryside, hoping to relax in nature and recuperate. While walking through the woods, she stumbles upon a mysterious tunnel, where she awakens someone or something that begins to haunt her.

Garland once again puts a high-concept into his work, once again speaks "simply about complicated things," once again makes a "slasher on steroids. It seems to be the same Garland, following a familiar pattern, but this time he digs deeper, in the direction of Eggers.

At first, you only see this film as a wink to the new ethics and fempowledge that men are most often to blame (they all look the same, literally!), and another admonition to run away from abusive relationships to a therapist. It's quite a relevant social statement, especially considering that Garland almost always sets the story in opposition to the male and female worlds, but behind the seemingly obvious allegories like the Eden apples and the blood-red walls and the tinsel provocations to draw out the audience's emotions there seems to me to be more than a condemnation of toxic masculinity.

Behind a fairly straightforward posthorror-thriller plot, more revealing of trauma than frightening, and therefore reminiscent of typical 2020s drama rather than canon horror, hides a classic folk-horror that's comparable to Lowry's "Legend of the Green Knight" or Aronofsky's "Mama!" Aronofsky. The references to paganism are not limited to the traditional island culture of the Green Man (one of the guises of God) and the face on the rocks (again, the many-faced God), if we dig around, we see a literal adaptation of the tenets of the Wicca, a neo-religion based on the veneration of nature.

Wiccans, followers of Wicca, worship not only God but also the Goddess. For most, it is a dualistic religion, perceiving God and the Goddess as "equal, complementary opposites, embodying the totality of the possible manifestations of nature. In the dianistic direction, however, Wicca glorifies exclusively the Goddess, "containing in herself absolutely everything. Moreover, if we continue to look for analogies with the film, we find that at the heart of the religion is "the obligation to take responsibility for one's own actions and minimize harm to self and others," and there are even "specific rituals designed to deal with personal gender trauma" in covens, including those involving domestic violence.

Thus, encroaching on traditional faith and mixing mythology with body horror, Garland has created an enchanting movie that screams with the voices of a multitude of unheard women. Maybe it's not like that, though. The director himself notes that Men "is like a kind of mirror: the audience will decide for themselves what the film says and what it doesn't say."
