Story Movie

A well-to-do English family hires an American nanny for their son. Arriving at the new place of work, the nanny discovers that her ward is not a real boy at all, but a human-sized doll, which is treated as a living person. But disturbing events that occur after the nanny breaks the rules make her believe that the doll may actually be alive.

Review 4K Movie

American Greta (Lauren Cohen) comes to England for a new job - the Gilshire family hires her as a nanny. The old people live in a mansion in the middle of the woods and behave very strangely - it turns out that their son Brahms, whom Greta must look after, is not a child at all, but a porcelain doll. Gilshires treat her like a live boy, but they pay well, so the girl agrees to close her eyes to the absurdity of what is happening and accepts their terms. Soon the couple goes on vacation, and Greta is left alone with Brahms - that's when the most interesting things begin.

William Brent Bell is a versatile creator. He works exclusively in the territory of horror, but so far he does not repeat himself - he shot about possession by the devil, about werewolves, and now put a kind of ommage to the famous story of Chucky. And it must be said that 'Doll' is probably the best work in the relatively short career of the director - in conjunction with screenwriter Stacey Menear, he made a really strong movie, which will not be a breakthrough in the genre, but can add Bell weight among colleagues.

'Doll' works on familiar patterns - a scared girl in a big and dark house we've seen more than once and more than twice. At times, of course, it looks secondary, though to his credit, Bell doesn't try to be an innovator. He honestly scares exactly as dozens of horror movies before him, because he knows that the 'boo' effect works anyway. And to press the appropriate atmosphere in the “Doll” turns out to the highest score - it comes to the point that even an ordinary toy begins to seem mysterious and extremely sinister.

Lauren Cohen is playing her first major role in a big movie, but she has already passed her exam - the star of 'The Walking Dead' doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. “Doll” after the popular TV show seems to be an easy walk for Lauren, because to play here, in fact, there is nothing - enough to look good and convincingly portray fright, and with both tasks she has no problem. It would have been much more interesting to watch Cohen, if the movie was a slightly different genre. The plot of 'Doll' provides an intriguing foundation for a strong psychological thriller, but the material is used in a more down-to-earth way, and with a different approach it could have been a potential festival hit.

However, in its genre, 'Puppet' is not an assembly-line passable product either. Despite all the obligatory components of not the most appealing horror movie, it manages to keep the intrigue until the last and you have to guess at the denouement. The final twist, in its turn, is among the main advantages of 'Doll' - it is absolutely not obvious and makes you look at the story in a completely different way. And it also demonstrates that the authors were inspired not by those classic films you might think. The ending, however, looks crumpled, but there is an explanation for this - the creators admit that a sequel will be launched in the development.

Against the background of predictable and painfully banal horrors, 'Doll' at least stands out with a fresh breath - it manages to competently lead the viewer away from the correct answer to the question and still surprise with the solution. Obviously, hitting a doll is a bad idea, but what are the consequences?
