When locals in a country town start being killed by a zombie kangaroo, the local sheriff must face her past and work with her eccentric uncle to defeat the beast before it kills everyone.

Review 4K Movie

When you sit down to watch a movie about a murderous zombie kangaroo, you know you’re not about to watch the next Citizen Kane. Even so, you still expect to have at least a little bit of fun, especially since any movie where the premise revolves around a rabid, larger-than-life animal is sure to entertain. It doesn’t matter if the movie is D-grade garbage as long as things are ramped up enough that comedy ends up taking the reins. Films like 2017’s VelociPastor and 2008’s ThanksKilling know just what to do to ensure audiences have a good time with a ridiculous premise. The dialogue is cringe-worthy and quotable, the kills are bloodily overdone, and you still leave the theater happy with having spent your hard-earned money on such a horrible film. Therefore, you’d expect a movie starring a homicidal marsupial to follow in kind. Unfortunately, though, Ryan Coonan’s Rippy is nothing short of one of the most uninteresting, boring films to ever grace the screen.

Within minutes of Rippy’s opening scene, we are treated to a shot of Rippy, himself, staring down the camera in all his rabid glory. Coonan wastes no time revealing the film’s villain, leaving nothing to the imagination so that by the time Rippy really starts to go on a rampage, his CGI body isn’t really much of a surprise. Rippy revolves around Maddy (Tess Haubrich), a local sheriff whose father tragically died saving her life years ago. Not wanting her father to have sacrificed himself in vain, Maddy dedicates her days to keeping her Australian community safe, so when local townspeople start showing up brutally murdered, Maddy is determined to catch the killer, and fast. As expected, she refuses to listen to Schmitty (Michael Biehn), her aunt’s quirky ex-husband, who warns her that the murders are actually being committed by a zombie “roo.” From there, the obvious notes are hit.

Let’s be clear, there’s nothing wrong with movies following classic formulas so long as they are at least somewhat entertaining in the process. In the case of Rippy, the movie is not only unoriginal; it’s also boring as hell. Literally nothing about this movie stands out as remotely interesting. The characters feel like they were plucked out of Shutterstock photos of actors dressed in cheap Spirit Halloween costumes. The acting is subpar at best, and soon you’ll find yourself begging for Rippy to claw his way through the screen and tear you to shreds just so you don’t have to watch the rest of the film. It’s genuinely impressive that a movie featuring such a campy selling point—zombie roo—somehow manages to be even more boring than watching every single episode of Joseph Campbell’s The Power of Myth back-to-back. Even Rippy is unimpressive, with his CGI form bringing nothing interesting to the table. In fact, the film would be 20 times better if they had just put someone in one of those inflatable Halloween costumes and let them run wild on camera.

Sadly, this is not the case, and we must instead settle for mediocre acting, plot and special effects. It’s not even really worth wasting more than a handful of paragraphs detailing why this movie is so unwatchable. The only reason this wasn’t rated zero percent is because someone had to show up on set and put in at least a little effort. The reality though, is that Rippy plays out like a third grader’s movie script that accidentally got made into a real film. Sadly, though, there’s a good chance even that movie would be better than what Coonan’s film has to offer.
