Story Movie

A Russian road crew accidentally discovers an underground crypt, and the supervisor, fearing robbers and criminals, stations guards near the site. Late at night, during an earthquake, one of the coffins rolls at the guard's feet. Unable to contain their curiosity, the guard opens the coffin and discovers the body of a dog impaled on a stake. She pulls the stake out of the corpse, which brings the vampire dog Zoltan to life.

Review 4K Movie

It goes without saying that old Charles Band (founder of Full Moon and king of third-rate trash) long ago surpassed his father, Albert Band. Albert has a rather small filmography in contrast to his son. Yes, yes, the apple fell far from the tree.

But that doesn't mean Albert made decent films, ha ha ha. How about this: Dracula's Dog from 1977. A mixture of animal horror (Albert clearly took a cue from Spielberg's Jaws and decided to make some extra cash, yes, but only on dogs) and vampire horror.

Check out the plot (hair-raising). Some soldiers disturbed a tomb of bloodsuckers somewhere in Romania. First, a dog named Zoltan woke up. The funniest thing is that Albert showed a flashback of the dog, how poor little dog was bitten by Dracula. Why? Hold your breath. Ready? Because the fleabag barked loudly under the windows, ah-hee-hee, preventing the sleeping humans from being bitten.

That's not all, damn it. Zoltan pulls an aspen stake (!) out of Dracula's assistant, a certain Wade Smith, with his fangs. You ask yourself a perfectly logical question: why does Wade come back to life if he is only an assistant and not a full-fledged vampire (and vampires are not obliged to come back to life, ha-ha)?

Here, pay close attention to the drug-addled script. Wade tells the dog that since they are servants, they must find the count's descendant (presumably to bite him and begin serving him). Oh, they set off for America together on a ship. Something like that, anyway.

Wade is played by Reggie “the man with the burnt face” Nolder. A strange actor who, two years after Dracula's Dog, would play Kurt Barlow himself in Tobe Hooper's Salem's Lot. He has a colorful appearance. It's no surprise that Albert constantly showed his face on the entire screen.

As for the vampire dog, it growls, glows in the night, sometimes bites, and for some reason often runs away from its victims (although it could easily take them down). No kidding, the trainers did a great job. The same cannot be said about Band Sr.'s direction. For some reason, he tried to create a tense atmosphere (to scare the audience) when he should have gone all out and turned the film into a 100% black comedy. He also deliberately stretched out the running time (with the dull walk of the local Van Helsing, for example).

Critics tore Dracula's Dog to shreds, giving it a rating of 4.4 on IMDB. Despite all its flaws, it's not the worst film I've ever seen. Charles Band's modern trash, to be honest, is worse. Therefore, my review is neutral.
