Story Movie

Tim and Millie have been living together for several years and no longer understand whether their relationship is based on love or has simply become a habit. They move to a small town where she starts working as a teacher, while he continues to try to record a music album. One day, the couple goes for a walk in the woods, falls into a mysterious cave, and spends the night there. The next day, Tim notices that something strange is happening to him—he finds it physically difficult to bear Millie's absence, and he is drawn to her with frightening force.

Review 4K Movie

Could it be that Michael Shanks has found Cronenberg's magical book?

The couple (who can no longer be called young, both in their thirties) are going through difficult times. They move to a small town and during one of their walks fall into a cave. The atmosphere there is eerie, with broken church benches and a huge bell with clearly non-Christian symbols. Later, they learn that there used to be a chapel of some sect there.

But the strangest part comes later. They are literally drawn to each other, and something is trying to make them inseparable, literally.

You know what's good? We're not made to wait for hours for the scary moments, only to have everything revealed in the last 20 minutes. Practically from the very first minutes, there are micro-screamers, building up the tension. Yes, they are small and almost unrelated to the main plot, but they are there and you don't have to yawn.

Of course, the cast adds special value. Dave Franco, who always looks like a slacker student, fits perfectly into the role of a 35-year-old husband-son. He doesn't work, doesn't drive, doesn't make any decisions, and still dreams of becoming a rock star. And Alison Brie, who looks older and even supports a family, although it's not easy for her—she works as a teacher and they don't even have enough money to buy two smartphones at once. But she is still ready to support her partner because he is such a romantic soul.

So I watched almost the entire film and thought the whole time—this is almost Cronenberg. Specifically, in terms of the psychological drama he loved to dilute his body horror with, which made him great. Plus the symbolism, the boundaries of individuality, codependency, and so on.

There is body horror here too, not as much as in Cronenberg's films, but it is still done well, atmospherically, and shown at the right moments, emphasizing the dark aesthetic when needed.

And everything would be fine, but by the end, Cronenberg leaves the room and the initial sharpness is lost. You've already gotten used to the disturbing moments, but their intensity doesn't increase, and it's clear that the authors don't know how to end all the twists and turns they started at the beginning, and... they end it really badly... The storylines of the secondary characters are cut off as if they couldn't find a place for them in the finale, and it's not clear how to perceive the finale of the main characters at all.
An ambiguous but interesting experiment in the genre. Probably on the theme of relationships, body horror as a tool for exploring psychological depths. Well, Cronenberg. The ending... I don't know... Maybe it's food for thought. Maybe it's worth watching again. But one thing I know for sure: the film did not leave me indifferent.
