Story Movie

Four years after those terrible events, Finn still hasn't recovered from what happened and occasionally hears the phone ringing, and his sister Gwen begins to have dreams in which Grubber kills three boys in a snowy camp. The girl also finds out that their mother went to a Christian camp as a teenager, and persuades her brother to go there. The boys arrive at the place and because of a heavy snowstorm find themselves cut off from the outside world, and meanwhile Gwen's dreams become more and more frightening and penetrate into reality.

Review 4K Movie

In the second part, Scott Derrickson explores the inner nightmares of Finn's family, who have endured difficult and tragic events. Just as they begin to recover from what has happened, his younger sister Gwen begins to have terrifying dreams that lead the main characters to a forgotten Christian camp that hides its nightmares and secrets.

This film was not originally intended to have a sequel; the story ended on a clear note and the director did not want to make a sequel, but his opinion changed after a short and sweet phone call from Stephen King's son, Joe Hill, with the words: “The phone rings, Finney answers, and on the line is the Kidnapper straight from hell.” This simple but frightening idea became the starting point for Derrickson, who developed it further. It was a very smart move not to simply resurrect the antagonist, but to turn him into an analogue of Freddy Krueger, which allowed the film to grow from a detective thriller into a full-fledged bloody horror film that pays homage to the slasher films of the 80s.

Sequels are rarely successful, often failing to live up to the box office success of their predecessors, but in this case, I can safely say that this film was made not for money, but with love, especially in terms of character development and the logical chain of events.

The father has become calmer and more balanced, although he does not fully believe in what Gwen is capable of, while really trying to be a good parent. Finn no longer allows himself to be offended and shows himself to be the boss and invincible everywhere, while trying to drown out his pain with aggression and overshadow all recent events. Everyone is trying to become better, in a sense, but they will have to face their fears again and either come to terms with them or overcome them once and for all.

The authors have very successfully guessed the winter setting, the snow-covered landscapes give the events a more gloomy and chilling character, and flashbacks from dreams shed light on new frightening events that we did not know about before, which makes the story more competently balanced. In the first part, I was captivated by Grabbler, brilliantly played by Ethan Hawke, with his changing emotions, mask, facial expressions, and insane behavior. It was interesting to find out what led to his cruel deeds, and here, several moments are devoted to this, which is very pleasing. The only thing is, in my opinion, he was given too little screen time; I wanted to see more. But on the other hand, they provided answers to many questions that could have remained after the finale of the first part, as well as added new plot twists that change the development of the story. The music further heightens the tension and was written by Atticus Derrickson, son of director Scott Derrickson.
I would like to mention the visuals separately, they are simply gorgeous. If you remember the scenes from Sinister, where the hero watched what happened to the previous residents, that grainy, eerie atmosphere has carried over here. The first half of the film is built on this kind of filming, as well as all of the Kidnapper's “visits” to our world. It looks very impressive and, at certain moments, gives you the chills.

Although the finale is approaching its conclusion, I would love to see Ethan Hawke as the Grabber again, given the potential to reveal more of his story, show flashbacks from his past, or how he met his sins in hell. The director has stated that he does not intend to make a sequel if it is not as good as the previous film, but the sequel to The Black Phone has surpassed itself on all fronts and has become one of the best horror films of the year.
