However, the guy’s happiness comes to a quick end—now Nikki is literally obsessed with the object of her adoration, and her displays of affection are becoming increasingly terrifying.

Review 4K Movie

Of course, I haven’t seen nearly all the films in the world, but based on the 350+ movies and TV series I’ve watched, I can’t think of another example of a film that made me feel such a high level of discomfort and unease.

I decided to watch this movie, first because I was intrigued by the idea of combining the dynamics of a romantic relationship with horror—and doing so in a way that didn’t resemble the “Bonnie and Clyde” tropes found in films like "Natural Born Killers" or "Wild at Heart"—and second, because it’s been getting a lot of buzz.

I kept getting distracted while watching it. And this was by no means due to boredom. It was caused by moments of intense social and existential horror. Feelings of shame, awkwardness, and “unnaturalness” were constant companions throughout the viewing. Throughout the entire film, I kept grimacing; I felt very uneasy and scared, and I really wanted to take advantage of the divine opportunity to sink into the ground and escape the situation—an option the characters, unfortunately, didn’t have. In those moments, I wondered: how did people in the theater watch this?

I can’t overlook the contribution of actress Indi Navarretti; she embodied the role perfectly, and the main source of such a rich spectrum of emotions undoubtedly rests on her shoulders.

All in all, it’s a truly impressive piece of work.

Nevertheless, even despite such a difficult experience, I was able to identify some important themes for myself. For me, the film is primarily about taking responsibility for one’s feelings and for oneself, as well as exploring the age-old question: what exactly do we mean by “love” for another person? In terms of its overall message, I’d compare this film to "500 Days of Summer", but wrapped in a much darker shell and with a different subtext. So, just as with "500 Days of Summer", I wouldn’t recommend watching this film with your significant other—unless it’s for therapeutic purposes.

As for what I didn’t like—it’s the body horror. In my opinion, it was unnecessary, didn’t really fit into the overall atmosphere of a social nightmare, and drew too much emotional attention to itself. It doesn’t serve the main narrative that I identified for myself, and, as it seemed to me, was included solely for shock value, distracting from the much stronger and more central atmosphere. Still, for now, it’s a very powerful trigger that should be used wisely.

As for the specific quality of the visuals and sound, I hardly noticed them during my first viewing. I can’t say anything bad about them: the quality is acceptable—it at least doesn’t detract from the film, and that’s quite enough. Perhaps this actually works in the film’s favor, helping to convey the down-to-earth and intimate nature of the moment without drawing attention to itself.

To sum up, "Obsession" wasn’t just a test of one’s nerves, but also a parable about why we must be personally accountable for every “I want.” It’s a heavy exploration of selfishness that makes you think about boundaries in relationships. Despite its claims to be a body horror film, this film definitely left an impression and provided food for thought, which is why I can unequivocally recommend it—with the caveat that you need to be mentally prepared for such an unusual cocktail of fear and anticipate uncomfortable questions if you decide to watch it with your partner.
