Story Movie

Every year, for 30 days, the small town of Barrow, Alaska, is plunged into darkness. The polar night is a perfectly normal occurrence in these parts. But one day, Sheriff Olson begins to suspect that this time, the thirty-day twilight won’t go so smoothly. Vampires are planning a bloody raid on Barrow.

Review 4K Movie

‘30 Days of Night’ is, to some extent, a unique film. Released a year before ‘Twilight’—which steered the vampire craze toward a more romantic rather than a darker and more serious direction— this film by David Slade can be called both the swan song of the genre in the 2000s and an original example of horror from a time when creative freedom could coexist with audience appeal and a decent budget.

And the budget for *30 Days of Night* is evident. A fairly authentic and atmospheric small-town setting in Alaska, a solid cast, a couple of spectacular moments for the genre, and very high-quality makeup. These elements definitely lend weight to the local story, which also turned out to be quite decent. After all, *30 Days of Night* offers a rare treat in the horror genre: truly dangerous and cunning villains. The local vampires aren’t mindless bloodsuckers who kill everyone in sight, but skilled hunters who know how to corner their prey. They send a girl out onto the street to call for help and lure out people who are hiding. Or they turn people into vampires and leave them in specific locations that the survivors might visit.

In other words, in terms of its villains, *30 Days of Night* is a textbook horror film. But obviously, since the vampires turned out to be so intelligent and dangerous, the screenwriters had to give the heroes some “protection,” because their movements through the city’s empty streets, or their temporary stay in an attic with a hole leading to the street, clearly raise questions: how come the vampires didn’t hear them or, quite simply, didn’t smell them (the local vampires are capable of that)?

But personally, I didn’t feel like nitpicking the film. Because in addition to its solid direction and the distinct originality of the local screenplay—which stems not only from the setting and powerful antagonists but also from the cruelty shown toward certain characters—“30 Days of Night” also boasts a strong cast. Josh Hartnett is quite good as the young sheriff of a small town, and Melissa George is, as always, sweet and charming—especially given the chemistry she shares with Hartnett on screen. The villains didn’t disappoint either. Ben Foster’s small role turned out to be distinctive and memorable thanks to his acting and his strange accent. The vampire gang itself, led by the sinister and charismatic Danny Huston in a role atypical for the actor, is also a delight in its unnaturalness. In this regard, I’d single out one of the girls and the bald brute, whose facial features looked frighteningly authentic—with their teeth, black eyes, and a constant layer of someone else’s dried blood on their faces.

The result is a powerful and tense survival horror film set in the wilderness, featuring brutal and intelligent adversaries. Even among 2000s horror films, this was a rarity, and in 2025—when the genre is in decline—“30 Days of Night” stands out as a hidden gem. It’s a shame that neither the film’s director nor the concept itself made it to the big leagues. On the other hand, no one can take this wonderful example of the genre away from us.
